I have spent quite a while over the last two months reading over the forums, and practicing taking pictures. So, I finally think I am getting the hang of it.
Considering 2 months ago, I never knew anything about telescopes or cameras I think I am progressing quite nicely.
Orion Nebula
Pleiades
The pictures were taking with a SkyWatcher 8", with a Canon Rebel XT, and guided with a QHY5 camera and PHD.
I also posted more pictures here: http://flickr.com/photos/aiidoneus/, you can see my progression. At first I couldn't get images focused, and I was getting a lot of star trails for longer exposures.
Slowly, but surely I am progressing thanks to all the advice on the site

That Orion is excellent! Far better than any of my M42 attempts.
I want a better camera

Looking at your Orion shot again, I was thinking it's quite astounding the level of detail you pulled out, but the core is blown out. If you want to take it a step further, here's a very quick and simple method to draw out the trapezium without losing your outer detail:
http://www.astropix.com/HTML/J_DIGIT/COMP2.HTM
I just recently used this myself and it works like a champ. If you fix the core, I would say your image would quite simply be one of the best Orion shots I've ever seen.

These are perhaps the best "first images" I've seen around here, especially the M42 iamge. They are orders of magnitude beter than my first attempts at these two objects.

As soon as it the sky clears up here, I am going to make another attempt at Orion and see if I can get more detail in the core. Thanks for the link DaemonGPF.
dreamer555 as for the software, I didn't really use anything. I stacked the few exposures I had with DeepSky Stacker, and I adjusted the black level using it as well.
The next images I do, I am going to try and add some 'dark frames', I didn't notice at first, but you can see red and blue pixels. my Pleiades picture has a lot of them

Mike, Those are indeed excellent images....as to processing you will find the use of Darks, Flats, and Biases your next challenge. But from the looks of these you're ready.

They sell the Skywatcher 8" & 10" scopes on EQ5 and EQ6 Pro mounts as well. I actually had the 8" with the EQ6 Pro but traded it in for a CPC800 as it was just more portable and I have no choice but to travel at the moment for visual and imaging.
Back on track though... fantastic image! You've certainly learned a lot to pull that M42 off so beautifully. I'm still at the star trail stage... I mastered the focus end of it finally.
Good stuff! and hello from a fellow K-W astronomy hobbiest!
