For those who haven't been following the other thread, I have a site with printable lunar maps, either gray countour or altitude color coded, at resolutions ranging between 1500x1500 to 2500x2500, and in correct-image, mirrored and Newtonian orientations. The lower resolution maps mark at least 660 features (seas, lakes, mountains, craters and the Oceanus; complete coverage for ones with diameter 40km and up, and partial coverage below that), and the higher resolution maps mark a few more. Here is the link:
http://pruss.mobi/moon.html
I've now added a link to a custom map generator. In the custom generator, you get a map with features you specify--you need to have their latitude and longitude, and diameter (if you don't have the diameter, you can always make it up--it just affects the size of the circle). This is nice for finder charts that have only one feature on them. You can even use it in the field if you have an Internet connection (I wonder how well it works with an iPhone?), though since this is running on my home server, which is mainly for my own use, there may be unscheduled down times, so don't rely on it.
The custom map generator is restricted to 1000x1000 and 1500x1500 maps, with somewhat lower jpeg quality than on the pre-built maps, to reduce load on my server. Please don't abuse the server, or I will have to remove the service. Enjoy!
In case you want a direct link to the custom map generator, it's:

I added a database of lunar features, so now a lot of standardly named features, e.g., craters, maria, etc., can be included by name, without one having to look up their coordinates. Also Apollo landing sites are included. (E.g., just put "Apollo 11".)

Hello All
Just to say a big thank you to Alexander for taking the time and trouble to put these maps together. Also to let you all know what I am using them for:-
I have printed off one of the maps with no marking on at all and laminated it and put it on the observatory wall. Also I have printed off a few A4 maps also with no markings on and I am using these with an acetate sheet that has rectangle cut in it that shows the field of view that the current imaging set up is giving me. When I am shooting sections for a mosaic I mark onto one of the maps by using the acetate and pencil so I can mark the sections I have captured and this helps with not missing area’s and also allows me to mark the file names onto Alexander’s maps
So there you have my use of the maps for what its worth
Regards all

I'd like to add some objects on the far side, by using a map projection that includes the 8 degrees of libration, just as the S&T maps do. (Basically, I'm going to linearly rescale the angular distance to 0,0 so that 98 degrees from 0,0 gets projected as if it were 90 degrees.)
Does anyone know of a good list of the features (with sizes and coordinates) on the far side? Wikipedia has some--is that the best? (For the near side, I am using xephem's list of features. But that list has nothing from the far side)
I am not going to replace the current maps, but just add a set with the new projection.

Alexander,
I'm not familiar with the "xephem" lunar features list, but I would assume it's derived from the IAU list. You can download the farside part of the IAU lunar list (along with all the other IAU-approved Solar System surface feature names) in Excel and a variety of other formats using the options in the panel on the right-hand side of their page.
Judging from your maps, the "xephem" list deviates from the IAU list in a few major ways (e.g., placing Cardanus in the Moon's southern hemisphere, and assigning unusually large diameters to some very small features like Abetti, Stella, and Diana); and in a number of minor ways, such as omitting the accent marks that are part of many IAU-approved names and giving others variant spellings such as "Vasco da" for "Vasco da Gama", "De la" for "De La Rue", "MacLear" for "Maclear", "MacLaurin" for "Maclaurin", etc.

Thanks for the IAU list link!
I've upgraded to the IAU list (at least for the static maps--the dynamic maps aren't there yet), and my computer is now regenerating all the maps. It will then upload the revised versions when it's done--some time in the middle of the night. The new maps will then be available at http://pruss.mobi/moon.html
(Update: The regeneration is now done--the new static maps are up.)

I just added a set of maps with an expanded projection. The expanded projection adds 8 degrees all around to compensate for libration, just as the S&T maps do.
http://pruss.mobi/moon.html
In case the projection method matters to anyone, it can be described in this way: First, if p is a point on the moon whose angular distance from 0N,0W is a, then move p directly towards 0N,0W by changing the angular distance to 0N,0W to be ma, where m=(pi/2)/(l+pi/2), and l is the libration amount (8 pi / 180). (Thus, points with angular distance l+pi/2 will move to angular distance pi/2.) Then project orthographically as usual.

Great find! Thanks for posting the link. I like the wide variety of options that the site gives for their maps. I also like the telescope reversed options which are useful for viewing in the field.
Edit: Thanks for making these! You should be given an award for your efforts.

I've been thinking of moving the names on the limbs out onto the black area outside the map, but I can't think of a good algorithm for doing it--I am worried that lines joining the name to the feature will run into other labels, etc. Any suggestions are welcome. (And I'll be happy to share the scripts with anybody who wants them. They PerlMagick.)

I am so glad someone has revived this thread! I added this resource to "The Best of the Lunie Bin" last fall and never got around to putting a note in here to that effect.

Over the next month or so, I'd ideally like to decommission the server that my customized maps run on ( http://pruss.homeip.net/alex/cgi-bin/moon.pl ), to conserve energy (I use the server for home- and work-related things, but the work stuff I will move to my work server, and the home-stuff I'd like to de-network; it's summer, and it's Texas, so any always-on heat-emitting device like my server needs a long hard look).
A quick glance at server logs suggests that I get a user of the customized map service once every few days.
I would be very happy if someone wanted to host the service. The service currently runs on apache+modperl (with PerlMagick for the graphics). At the current usage level, bandwidth will be low. Server requirements are not particularly high--my the current server is a P4 at 2ghz with 512mb RAM.
But it seems to me to be a service that's worth keeping.
The static moon maps at http://pruss.mobi/moon.html are not affected by this.

As a semi-temporary fix, I relocated the service to http://pruss.mobi/cgi-bin/moon.pl . (That site hosts my PalmOS shareware stuff. I didn't realize I could run scripts on the server. However, PalmOS is dead, so once it's time to terminate support, I will take down that site. But it'll probably run for another year or two at least.)
