Hunter's Moon new
      #2699879 - 10/15/08 01:38 AM

Here’s my capture of the Hunter’s Moon rising through clouds as seen from Arlington Heights, Illinois on 2008 OCT 14 at 18:06 CDT. That was 19 minutes after moonrise and 5 minutes before sunset.

Great shot!
I love the framing, with the autumn colors.

Nice! I saw this yesterday as well. What intrigues me about the larger Moon illusion (when it is low rather then high) is the fact that the details are larger (that’s OK) but also more obvious. If this is an illusion, than why do I feel that I see more details? Is it because the glare is reduced when the Moon light is reaching us through a thicker atmosphere?

Again, nice shot!

Thanks Benoit and Jimmy. I imagine that the reduced glare has much to do with it. Also, it may be easier to concentrate when looking level with the ground rather than straining to look upward. In my latest photo, thin clouds were passing in front of the Moon while the Sun had not yet set. These factors would have further reduced the glare. The telephoto lens on my camera and cropping of the image increased the apparent size of the Moon.

A Full Moon is particularly glaring because the angle at which sunlight strikes the Moon from our perspective almost eliminates visible shadowing from mountains and craters. A Full Moon is actually about 12 times brighter than a Half Moon (first/last quarter position).

Moon Photo on TV new [Re: Centaur]
      #2702173 - 10/16/08 11:39 AM

Tom Skilling of WGN-TV in Chicago displayed the photo during his weathercast last evening. It’s also on his weather blog along with another one I took four minutes earlier when the Moon was deeper in the clouds: http://blogs.trb.com/news/weather/weblog/wgnweather/

Some folks have requested a larger version for their computer’s desktop background wallpaper. I now have one at my astronomical webpage: http://www.curtrenz.com/astronomical.html

Thanks, John. The director of the play I’m in must’ve liked it too. He made it the wallpaper on his cell phone. I guess that means he won’t fire me! I’m off to rehearsals right now for A Few Good Men which will be presented in Palatine, Illinois in late November: http://hiddentalenttheatre.org/
