NGC 1491 - Emission Nebula

NGC 1491 is a small emission nebula in the constellation of Perseus. The 10th magnitude star to the west makes this nebula fairly easy to find; however, it was virtually invisible without the use of my OIII filter. The use of the filter makes this nebula pop into plain view.
Although this nebula is fan-shaped in photographs and has many finer tendrils, in the EP from my location all I was able to resolve was a oval patch of light. Still, this is an interesting nebula and, when using the OIII filter is one that offers spectacular views as it is nestled in a very rich star field.
The nebula was sketched with the OIII filter in place, and the background stars were sketched without the filter. Approximate time at the EP to sketch this object along with the background stars was just a hair under 45 minutes. Digital rendering created using original pencil sketch as a template in PhotoShop.

Wade,
An excellent (and well executed) observation of this interesting emission nebula in Perseus. It appears "ghostly" in your rendering as it must in the heavens. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

I can not tell you how many times this nebula eluded me before I purchased the OIII filter.

Very delicate and beautyful rendering!! 
It must be a though target, as you needed an OIII filter with your scope.

Thank you for the compliment! 
I wouldn't say it is a "tough" target per se, but oddly enough when I looked at it through the EP without the filter, all I could see was the star nestled next to it and the surrounding star feild. But when I used the filter, it was easily and unmistakably visible.

I tried to pick this one out several years ago but without a filter. I think you have inspired me to try again with a filter. Beautiful sketch by the way.

That object seemed to be just a bit bigger with the UHC filter when viewed from a dark sky site. The OIII helped as well, providing a bit more contrast, but in the UHC, it appeared just a bit larger with better visibility of the outermost nebulosity. Clear skies to you.

Thank you for the tip in regards to using/trying a UHC filter. I will indeed try a UHC (which I just ordered) next time I center this object in the EP.

Hey..... now I find this thread! I just posted asking for impressions. The drawing is close to what I saw in my 5-inch F/7.5 APO (despite some frost starting to form on the lens) while observing from my front lawn last night. I was using a 26mm Nagler and a Lumicon UHC filter.

Wow, its really like looking at the eyepiece. I saw tons of dim nebuleas and galaxies like that. Some are so faint they are almost invisible like your sketch. To me its a very very good representation of the real thing.
