Better focus method for individual eye diopter.
      #2719710 - 10/26/08 10:01 PM

Wow, the new Bahtinov focus mask I made works great!

When I saw this on a forum, I grabbed the nearest cardboard (a priority mail box), and went after it.

Yep, I usually wear glasses, but don't when I am observing so I can get the full field of view. My eyes don't need much correction, but diopter correction is different for each eye. I have a Denk II binoviewer that has individual diopter adjustment for each eye, but I had a lot of trouble using just an open scope or even a Hartmann mask to match the focus for each eye. With the diffraction spikes on the Bahtinov mask, I can just dial in the focus . . . so easy!

Lots of info about this mask here on the Cloudy Nights forums here:
Revolutionary new way of focusing! No less!

I used the pattern generator here:

Thanks! I'm absolutely loving having a binoviewer on my scope. The only difficulty has been tracking down some eye-to-eye disparity issues. The big one was having the eyepieces firmly fixed in place straight so that the images line up right. The other was difficulty with finding sharp focus . . . turned out to be a sligtht difference in focus between my two eyes, now resolved as well with this focus mask.

Best regards,
Rob Crockett
