was curious what type of resolution I should expect from these binoculars. They are huge and gather tons of light.
When looking at the orion nebula I could barely see 3 seperate stars in the triangulum any bright star had a bit of aberration. It seems that the right side doesn't quite focus as clearly as the left. Overall though things look pretty good. wasn't expecting Pentax optics but I've heard some have had problems and wasn't sure if this is what to expect.

the inability of a 25x100 binocular to focus clearly enough to see 4 stars in the trapezium indicates one or more of the following.
atmospheric seeing is horrible you are not focusing carefully and precisely. your eyes are not capable of very good resolution. the binocular suffers from spherical aberration.
unless you have previously confirmed some of the above with other instruments, there is no way for us to tell.

This type of binoculars are essentially two 25X 100mm refractors with an erecting prism system between the objective and EP. One way to find out if the problem is caused by the right or left barrel is to isolate each side.
If these are IF bino you can just cover the RIGHT objective to see if you can achieve pin point focus in the left.
If you are able to achieve pin point focus with the LEFT barrel/LEFT eye combo then switch the cover to the LEFT objective.
Again using you LEFT eye, look into the RIGHT EP and focus. If you are able to achieve pin point focus with RIGHT barrel/LEFT eye combo but not with RIGHT Barrel/RIGHT eye combo then the problem is more likely to be issue with your right eye.
If you can NOT achieve pin point focus with the RIGHT Barrel/LEFT eye combo then the problem is with the optical train of the right barrel. I would not accept any binocular that can not focus stars to a point source on axis in either side. If that's the case and this pair was purchased new I would seek warranty adjustment.

I purchased a pair of these in late 2006. They had a similar problem: the left side would focus pretty sharp but exhibited unacceptable flaring of stars; the right side showed no flaring but could not focus stars to pinpoints (they looked like little white fuzzballs). I checked both sides with each eye and saw the same things. Needless to say, back they went (the refund being applied to my first pair of Vixen ARKs).

TY all! I believe it is a problem with the right barrel. stars have a bit of uncorrectable flare. If it was my rcx it would be a collimation issue, being refractors i guess it is a production problem. I paid $225 delivered and couldn't resist. Hi Edz, i see you are a fellow Rhode Islander. How are the skies up there now adays? I grew up in east greenwich/warwick and it was dark as a kid. been out of town for about twenty years, last time I was back I was amazed by the light pollution in the warwick area. very sad. I remember when there were farms all around.

I had the same problem with my Tachyons and it turned out to be a collimation issue (right barrel). After taking them apart and playing with the collimation screws took care of the problem. I'm very happy with them now!

To me any NEW binocular requiring end user disassembly to correct defects deserve a one-way trip back.
I may take apart a pair of USED binocular I paid $22.50 for at the flea market if I made the purchase konwing there was a problem before hand. Not a pair of 25X100s purchased new for $225. Would anyone accept a new LCD monitor displaying a blurry image on the right half of the screen? Just my opinion.
