The most beautiful pallasites new
      #2743188 - 11/09/08 05:50 PM

When considering the plethora of pallasites on the market, a number of factors come into consideration : price, stability, olivine content, quality of olivine content, specimen type, provenance, etc. But one factor remains predominate in the selection of a pallasite : aesthetics.

In my opinion, here are some of the most beautiful pallasites. I have linked their Meteoritical Bulletin entries. Scroll down through the information in each bulletin and you'll see a section called "Photos" with more links. Click on each of the photo links to see some striking snapshots of these wonderful pallasites.

In no particular order :

FUKANG :

Quote:

From the Meteoritical Bulletin Entry - "An anonymous finder recovered a 1003 kg specimen near Fukang, China, in 2000. The sample was at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show in February 2005, and seen by D. S. Lauretta of UAz. Approximately 20 kg had been removed from the main mass by the finder before the Tuscon show and the mass investigated at UAz was 983 kg."

ESQUEL :

Quote:

From the Meteoritical Bulletin Entry - "Chubut Province (Patagonian Territory), Argentina...FOUND...before 1951... 1 specimen, weight about 1500 kg. The meteorite was found embedded in the soil; brought to Buenos Aires City, is in possession of his finder."

...

IMILAC :

Quote:

From the Meteoritical Bulletin Entry - Found in Antofagasta Chile 1822, TKW of 920 kilograms.

Unfortunately, Imilac's MB Entry is quite understated. Most of the linked photos show the uncut rough Imilac which is not very pretty. But, the second photo by ArizonaSkies gives some idea of what properly prepared Imilac is capable of. Note the reflection of the desert landscape in the bottom portion of the slice's mirror finish.

...

GLORIETA :

Quote:

From the Meteoritical Bulletin Entry - Found in 1884 New Mexico, USA. Total recovered weight so far is approx. 148 kilograms.

Glorieta is a metal-rich pallasite, and on occasion specimens are seen with no olivine content. Even then, Glorieta's metal content reveals an intricate Widmanstatten pattern that is quite distinctive and beautiful. When combined in a properly-prepared specimen with high olivine content, the result is a pallasite whose beauty is almost unmatched.

Honorable Mentions for other Pallasites which can be very beautiful - Seymchan, Brenham, and Pallasovka.

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG

FUKANG : checked it out and was amazed almost looks like amber in there.. mouth watering...
ESQUEL : looks nice i wonder if when you cut these they come out to look so polished or do they do this seperately
IMILAC : that first pic looked like something i made yaers ago in science class the next one was so clear almost looks fake.
GLORIETA : that last one looked cool and also made my eyes water one day i wil start correctly
once i get my finances in shape i intend to start off right.
and i think that book you have for sale would be a good purchase if no one wants it i want it.

A postage stamp sized slice of each in a Riker box would be nice.
What is the going price?

Hi Ed,

Ballpark figures, off the top of my head :

(assuming postage stamp sized, with translucent high-quality olivine, and stable specimen)

1) Esquel - $750 - $1000 (give or take)

2) Fukang - $500 - $750 (give or take)

3) Imilac - $250 - $400 (give or take)

4) Glorieta - $250 - $400 (give or take)

So, roughly speaking, you'd be looking at about $1500-$2500, depending on which way the market winds are blowing.

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG

And speaking of Pallasites, don't forget the first one, The Krasnojarsk Pallasite. I posted a pic and some info about Krasnojarsk in the CN thread called A Few Good Meteorites but here's the pic again:

Hi Martin!

That is truly a lovely pallasite! I just didn't include it on the list because it's not one you commonly see on the market. I need to go re-read your entry on it, because I had almost forgotten about it. I love pieces that show both the outside and inside of the specimen - your's does that perfectly.

BTW, for anyone looking to buy some rare and beautiful pallasites, here is a link to a fellow collector who is currently selling off some of his collection. I am not affiliated with him in any way, other than the fact that I drool over the specimens he has for sale. But most of them are priced out of my league unfortunately.

As the seller admits, the photos are not the best. I would LOVE to have that slice of Thiel Mountain pallasite!

Santa Claus, please take notice of the Thiel pallasite! I have been a good boy this year.

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG

PS - also notice that this seller has some Esquel and Imilac and his prices are not too far off what I quoted previously.
