Wooden tripods-source-experience
      #2763542 - 11/21/08 04:49 PM

Does anyone have experience with the wooden contractor style tripods sold by various manufacturers, Sokkia, CST, Berger for telescope use. I'm looking for one that will give good height when extended for a Meade AR5 refractor. Any ideas or experiences will be appreciated

I just bought a CST from Stakemill today under their own brand name. They have many brands, styles, and construction materials. I'll put my Orion Teletrack head on it after modifying the hold down bolt. It's considerably more rigid than many small tripods including the one that comes with the Orion.

What type of head(alt/az or equatorial) are you going to attach to the surveyor's tripod?

For the AR-5, I'd go with a surveyor's tripod that has double leg locks- quick-clamp at the top and screw lock at the bottom.

For what it's worth, you can get more height out of that tripod with a SkyView Pro Mount Extension. Some filing of the azimuth post is needed. Note that the SVP extension will add about 12-15lbs of more weight to the mount.

I bought the one than Universal Astronomics sells. It is really nice and sturdy. I've got my Antares 127mm f6.45 mounted on it. I use it with the Unistar Basic mount.

The Pro Mount Extension is one of the first items I considered, however they appear to be scarcer than hen's teeth. Virtually every dealer that carries them says not in stock maybe 4 to 6 weeks and they all are supplied ultimately from Orion as the source.

I just bought from UA a UniStar Deluxe altaz mount along with their Sokkia heavy duty wooden surveyors tripod. The tripod is very sturdy and can extend to about 62". It can hold my C11 without any problem with dampening times of about 2-3 seconds.

SV 102ED doublet refractor on a UA UniStar Light mount on a UA light surveyor tripod with a Manny Miles eyepiece tray.

Garrett Optical 10x50 and 12x60 binoculars. Also Garrett Optical 30x100 binoculars mounted on a SLIK Pro 700DX AMT tripod.

Several TV Plossls and Naglers, plus a few very good Celestron Ultima wide TFOV eyepieces.
