Omega Centauri globular cluster? new
      #22522 - 11/22/03 02:26 PM

Hi Guys,

I'm going to west Africa next week ( Togo ), I'm thinking to take my binocular with me. Do you know if omega centauri globular cluster is visible at this period of the year??

You mean Omega Centauri? Proxima centauri is the closest star to the sun (it's Alpha Centauri C). You should see Centaurus befre dawn.

Anyway if you are dropping 50-60° south, take your telescope with you. It would be a shame not to.
Even now that I have a 16", I can't get away from my retina the view of the Great Omega I had after lugging my 4 1/2 to Brazil.
Also take a star atlas with you, It would be an even bigger shame to have a scope down there and not know where to look.

On Skyandtelescope.com you have an easy to use planetarium program, where you can adjust your location

Sorry you're right, it is omega centauri..I did correct it.
It seems to me that this is not the good period to see this globular cluster at this location.

I barely saw it through my 50mm refractor, for obvious reasons... But I hope to see that jewel quite better with my new scope. It is now below the horizon, but it begins to be nicely placed in the sky (in my site) in March.

I saw it though my 15x70, it just like a haze cloud, as big as the Moon. If I uses a 4 inches telescope, the result would be very breathtaking. Just share.^_^

I'm back from Africa but unfortunately omega centauri cluster was under the horizon
Orion was very high..the sky was nice there!!
So I'll try to go again around march.
