Hello,

This is my first picture post in this part of the forum. I usually post my astrophotography in the DSLR section as I have made the switch to the darkside.

Before my girlfriend bought me a Canon Xti DSLR, I was into film. I tried my hand at prime focus astrophotography through my C8 and failed. I believe I was too young to be using an off axis guider at that time (13-14). It was a lot of frustration. And Wal-Mart could never process my pictures correctly anyway.

What you see below was one of the best piggyback film shots I have ever taken. This was also from my first roll of E200:

Photo Details:
Camera: Olympus OM-1
Lens: Olympus Zuiko MC Auto-S 50mm f/1.8 shot at f/4
Mount: Piggybacked on C8 fork mount
Exposure: 3 x 30 min
Developed at local lab, no pushing
Scanned at local lab (not sure what type of scanner)
Three exposures combined in MAXdslr
Photoshop CS2

I believe the pictures were taken about 6-7 years ago when I was around 16. They were taken from my parents house in Theriot, Louisiana. The skies are pretty dark.

I am now 23 and about to graduate from LSU. I would have to say that I am loving my DSLR. But I will be breaking out the Olympus in a couple nights to help image the Geminid meteor shower. We will see how that goes.

Check out some of my DSLR shots: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23148441@N03/sets/72157603787621660/

Thanks for looking!

Excellent widefield -- you sure captured lots of background stars.

Here is another version, processed a little differently:

The stars are smaller in this one. I may like this one better.

Very nice widefield view of Orion and its treasures. For a film image it looks allot like a dslr shot. I wonder if your habits processing dslr images has rubbed off on this film image. The contrast is very high. Just an observation. I like it. Oh, welcome to the "other" side. Jump in, the waters fine.

Yep I processed this image the same way I would a DSLR one. Except I had to work with .jpeg when stacking.

Here is what I was able to obtain with a DSLR recently:

Ramah, Louisiana
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens
at f/5.6
Piggybacked on Celestron C8 Fork Mount
Manually guided with 12mm rectile eyepiece
Canon XT Modified
9 X 600 second exposures (1.5 hours)
ISO 800

I really miss the full frame of film!

Yes I agree I overdone the contrast on the first image. I looked at the image on another computer besides my laptop and didn't like it. I like my 2nd process better.

For reference, here is a single 30 min. film sub straight from the scanner, no processing:
