Michael,

Thank you for your excellent observation of Comet Lulin. This is an interesting comet to follow. I hope to be able to observe it soon myself. I look forward to your future observations.

Rony, Carlos, thank you much. Hope to see your comet observations soon. It might clear here over the weekend and allow me another look.

Thanks, T5. Drag yourself out of bed and take a look--binoculars will do the trick.

I made a new observation and sketch this morning (Feb. 1st). The sketch is here. This drawing was done indoors with HB and 2B pencils and a stump from observing notes and then inverted digitally.

Michael,

Excellent sketch and report. The comet looks very nice in your drawing and I thought I would get a look too but once again clouds moved in at 3AM local time and were here to mid morning.

Frank

Michael,

What a fine comet-sketch!

I hate early mornings soo much.
Just give me an evening comet and I'll be there.

Frank, Rony, T5--thanks, guys. I think you'll get your evening comet wish soon as we close with Lulin during February.

We're under a winter storm warning for the next 36 hours here, so no comet gazing for me until Friday at the earliest. I hope it's clear that morning because the comet will be near the wide double Alpha Librae (Zubenelgenubi, the Southern Claw ).

Hi,

I struggled with clouds and moonlight the past two mornings but luckily was able to make a new sketch of Lulin. Because clouds kept obscuring the view and twilight was looming, I had to work fast. After observing off and on for a half hour, I did the sketch in about 15 minutes (which is very fast for me). As soon as it got too light, I went inside and rounded the stars, etc. I used HB, 2B, and 4B pencils and a loaded stump, then inverted things digitally and applied a 5% blur.

It will be hard to see much of the comet for the next few days as the Moon goes through its bright phase, but there are some excellent images in the Lulin thread for armchair observers.

Michael,

Very nice observation and quick sketch. You were able to capture much using averted vision under not so great observing conditions.
Thursday night-Friday morning I was out observing most of the dark hours. As the moon approached the NW horizon, I turned my attention to the Southeastern sky to catch my first look at the comet but the cloud cover and seeing in this direction was very obstructive. I could not visually see Alpha Lib.(Zuben El Genubi) but with binoculars I found the alpha star and comet Lulin and got a brief look. It was not worth turning my scope on it so I didn't. I'll just need to try again as the moon wanes to a crescent.
You should be commended for the way you persisted on this comet.

Frank

Hi Folks,

I posted a new sketch of Comet Lulin here in the Planetary and Solar System Observing forum. The comet has gone through some major changes since my last sketch and has turned into a real beauty. Try for it in the next couple of days if you can--it's between Saturn and Regulus.

The sketch was done with 2B and HB pencils and a stump and inverted digitally.

Thanks for sharing. Wondeful sketch.

Unfortunately I'm clouded out for the foreseeable future (at least through the weekend). So it looks like I'll be missing the prime observing of this comet.

Michael,

Great sketch and report. I see the tails are much different.

I have been out the last 3 nights with scopes but have had my attempted observations stopped by clouds. Tonight started out great with clear skies until abour 7:30 pm local time. I don't feel too bad because I did get brief looks with 8 x 50 binoculars. Next 2 nights look poor for my location.
I am glad you persisted and got some great sketches and reports completed. I hope you have fully recovered from the flu. Thanks again, nice to see sketches of Lulin.

Frank

Jim, Frank, thanks. I was fortunate to have some clear weather--clouds have returned until next week. I'm still a little dazed by the flu (apparently my flu shot didn't apply to this bad boy), but I'm back to work and ambulatory.

Hi,

I made an observation and sketch of Comet Lulin March 17th (March 18, UT)--it's faded some but still interesting.

Michael,

Excellent capture from Tuesday night.
I'll be watching it move away and I hope I can get another sketchable view.
Frank

Thank you, Frank--I hope you can post another sketch of Lulin as it goes though its changes.

I forgot to say that I used HB and 2B pencils and a stump on white Artagain paper to do the sketch. I inverted the sketch after scanning.
