Here's a link to a comprehensive list of the worlds largest optical telescopes & related observatories as posted by Bill Arnett on his site. Also included is the respective website to each.
A Very informative list IMHO!!!

It sure is. I was fascinated by the OWL (OverWhelmingly Large Telescope)
The OWL seems to demonstrate, as Dick Suiter has repeatedly stated, that a larger aperture makes up for lack of a perfect optical surface, even though it seems like cheating! The OWL segmented mirror is 100 meters across, and their design target is a Strehl ratio of only 0.20 (hoping for 0.30) For reference, a excellent quality amateur-sized mirror is required to have a Strehl above 0.95 (where 1.0 is perfect.)

Well, you can send it on over to me. I'll take care of it for you while you build a bigger one to get on the list....

Great collection of links. I love to check out those sites. It is amazing to me the great variety of approaches to building the ultimate scope. See thread in the refractor forum entitled "The Grand Daddy of Them All" for a picture and discussion of the 40" refractor. I just visited 2 weeks ago - unbelievable! Built over 100 years ago.

The OWL link was very cool. They even seem to have a sense of humor about the project becuse they say "if it has to be scaled back" because of budget constraints, the then acronym will be "Originally Was Larger"
