X Shaped Lunar Ray off Crater Blanchinus
      #285484 - 12/18/04 11:51 PM Attachment (79 downloads)

Tonight I was out just clowning on the Moon through the fog. Even though the view was a bit fuzzy the seeing was actually quite steady. Anyway, as I was moving along the terminator trying to identify craters I came across an unusual Lunar Ray. Suddenly I remembered a recent article in the Nov/Dec '04 SkyNews about this X shaped Ray. I dashed to the camera as the clouds thickened and the Moon moved towards the trees. This is the best shot of the bunch with my wife's Cannon Powershot S50 held up to a 12mm Speers WALER and my 6" dob. Time was 1950hrs PST on Dec18/04. It was very cool to see.

Bill,

I'm not sure that lunar (light) ray is the right terminology for the "X".

Dave; Yes I figured that out after going to the Lunar Orbiter site to figure out what was causing it. Still I like the serindipity of finding something I'd read about but then forgotten. David Chapman's article that I read had predicted it's reappearance quite well. He said 2200hrs EST. I saw it at 1950 hrs PST.

Carol; That's cool. You were lucky enough to get a way better picture. The sky was so foggy here by the time I took the photo you almost couldn't see the Moon.

Thanks for the input.
