A questar 3.5" is an example of a classic.

A Meade ETX 90 is an example of a decent, popular scope that may become a collectible and even an antique (provided the plastic doesn't crumble to dust), but it'll never be a classic.

Just my paradigm (that's 20 cents).

Yep. Me? I very much consider the 90 a classic. Not only has it (sorry) produced views right up there with the 3.5, it has had MUCH more of an effect on amateur astronomy than the Q3.5 IMHO. But that is just my opinion, and does not make my idea of "classic" right and yours "wrong" or vice versa...and that's a Good Thing.

Hey Uncle Rod:
How about the Celestron C90 Astro model? I might call that a classic, for one reason, due to its scarcity. I've never looked at, or through an ETX 90, so I have no reference, but how would you say that the Celestron C90 compares optically to the ETX, since you put the ETX on a par with the Questar? Thanks, Rich

That's a milestone, then.

Like the Model T has has been determined to be the most important car of the 20th century, but the Model T isn't a classic.

Maybe the ETX 90 could be called a 'milestone' then. But milestone cars, like the Hudson Hornet, are innovations of new ideas (the step-down, wrap-around frame), not copies (the ETX 90 isn't the first 90mm Mak).

Anybody ever ask the oldscope yahoo group what they consider antiques, collectibles, classics? Because 25 year old cars may be antiques, but furniture needs to be 100.

-Tim.

I don't know about all the other brands, but as Celestron is concerned, the term "Vintage" is supposed to ONLY apply to their blue-white scopes of the 60s. The term "Classic" is supposed to apply only to the orange-tube models from the 70s. Best, Bob Piekiel
