Still too soon to know - no bad reports so far, though.

Wow!

I'm amazed to see this thread having fallen down so far in the history! People are spending more time talking about the potential existense of the CGE Pro! and what it might mean than about the new drive that we KNOW has been released. Weird!

My bigger concern here is that no news may be bad news. Whats up? Have things quieted down because of cloudy nights or do the owners not have anything else to say about their new mounts? Or are they out there having so much fun with them that they haven't had time to come back and let us know how it's going?!! To try to get some conversation restarted, I'll post my previous question here in the hopes that one of the new CGEM owners can give us a definitive answer.

I'm looking to be able to do a side-by-side configuration on my CGEM when it arrives in a couple of months, and am wondering if it has the same limitations in range of motion as the CGE, thus requiring a right angle adapter to rotate the side-by-side dovetail bar ninety degrees. I appreciate the comments I've received so far from others who think the CGEM does not suffer from the same limitation as the CGE, but I'd really like to hear from an owner of a CGEM who can actually confirm whether or not that's the case. Thanks.

Beo

Yes, please, to the owners, when the heavens clear, you might try this simple test:

1) Do a polar Align with the new routine of the CGEM, you should be very close (the new routine doesn't involve pointing to Polaris as opposed to the CG5 routine)
2) plug a ccd camera and ty to image your favorite object and report what's the longest unguided sub you can use, at least at 1000 mm of focal lenght.

This test resumes the mechanical capabilities of an equatorial mount under a certain load and the accuracy of the new polar routine.

1000 mm can be reached with a 100mm aperture F/10 refractor or a C8 reduced at F/5 and obviously the constraint on the meachnical gear will not be the same even with an equal focal, but still, I would say that 2 minutes subs at 1000 mm focal would be a significant improvment over a CG5, 2 minutes subs at 2000 mm focal would be fantastic, on a par with the tracking accuracy of the CGE, but less than 2 minutes subs at 1000 mm would be sort of disapointing.

I know that this thread has indicated the CGEM uses the same sized counterweight shaft as the CG5, but I'd appreciate some dimensions from the center of the rotational axes to the center of the counterweight, as well as the distance from the axes to the dovetail saddle. I'd like to verify that the single 17 lb counterweight will be sufficient for my setup, but I need these dimensions to be able to calculate the torque and determine where the balance will be.

On a related note, has anyone seen the 17 lb counterweights sold separately anywhere? I've only seen the 11 lb CG5 weights.

Thanks,

Beo

I too would really like to know more about this mount. I never ended up buying the CPC1100 (kitchen renovations went over budget even MORE than expected) and am now thinking of spending a few extra $$s and picking up one of these.

It seems like it would be able to handle the 11" OT for visual use which is great, and on really good nights I can rig it up with my APO for imaging and use my dob for hopping.

Any new info at all would be greatly appreciated

The CGE does not need a rt. angle adapter for side by side configuration. A riser is helpful however or a different saddle from Casady. My riser is home built. I purchased the mount new a couple of years ago and it worked right out the box side by side w/o any firmware updates. Select UNDO at switch position at alignment start-up....carl
