I just watched a fantastic movie: October Sky (1999), which was based on the high school memoir of NASA engineer Homer Hickman. Oh, how I wish I could turn back the clock and give credit to a handfull of science kids it was a pleasure to know and be around. The glasses, pocket protectors, slide rules, and memo pads that pointed the way for the future scientists of the 1950s. Tommy, Larry, Jimmy, and Stuart--I wish I could go back and learn as much as possible from you. You guys were great! Still are great! Always will be great!

It's one of my favorite movies from that era. One of these days I'm going to have to read the book!

The book "Rocket Boys" was re-released as "October Sky" following the movie.
It's an excellent book about rocketry, coal mining, the 50's, JFK, and so many other things. I was reminded of "Moby Dick" which is probably the best book ever written on the subject of whaling, never mind the plot.
Put this book on your must-read list, Dave. It's well worth it.

I saw the movie when it originally was in the theaters
10 years ago and has become one of my all-time favorites.
When I was a kid I built and launched Estes model rockets,
and after seeing the movie I was curious if model rocketry
was still around, and discovered high-powered rocketry.
By the summer of 2000 I had my high-power certification
and was going to rocket launches every month.
Alas, in the post 9/11 environment high-powered rocketry
became subject to draconian new federal regulations, and
now requires a federal explosives permit, so I had to
give it up. But it was fun (but expensive) while it lasted.
A few years ago Homer Hickam was in the area on a book
lecture tour, I was able to attend and he signed my copy
his book.

No need to completely give up on it, EJN.
The Rocketry Forum is at long last back online.
