This could get habit forming new
      #2876393 - 01/20/09 12:01 AM Attachment (26 downloads)

I'm already looking at objects with a different attitude. Kinda like 'if I was drawing this....'.

My 2nd effort from the moon. My scale got a little out of whack on the canyon. Just not enough points of reference around to gauge things.

I could really use some suggestions on how to even out the shading with charcoal. I went over lightly with the pencils and used a tortillon to blend it but there are still lighter and darker areas.

Another attitude change I am noticing, Being primarily a DSO observer I used to curse the moon. Now I'm waiting for it to come back.

Mikiek,

Beautiful sketch. It looks pretty well blended to me. If you wanted to lighten some areas you could wrap a little paper towel around one of your tortillons if the area is to small to blend with a finger.
Sketching the moon causes a positive mental adjustment.

outstanding lunar sketch you have a real eye for detail, and a great feel for lunar texture which is possibly the toughest part to get right on lunar sketches.

Mikiek

Your work appears as from a born artist. Are you left handed? Excellent!

I understand and agree wholeheartedly about rediscovering the moon through sketching. I could not wait for it to go away years ago as I too was only a planet and DSO observer. Now I wonder why it takes the moon so long to come back into the evening sky for sketching!

Your recent work here has convinced me to try black graphite on white paper for the first time.

Mark

Mark - Thanks for your kind words of support. It really makes it easier for a rookie to feel comfortable posting beginner sketches when there are so many wonderful posts from our talented forum.

I look forward to your white paper sktech!

Mike, that's a great sketch. There is a lot of visual interest in that particular field of view, and you have captured it nicely.

I also struggle with shading issues, in trying to capture undulations and rough terrain. But sometimes I surprise myself! Keep at it and you will keep improving.

And yes, it is habit forming.

Mike,

Nice sketch! That looks way better than my first attempt at that region.

I think the shading looks pretty good. What I find interesting is that your angle of view looks to be different than mine, even though we both sketched it on the same evening.

I like how you've made the sketch look three dimensional, something with which I struggle.

Keep it up!

Thanks Jim - I forgot to rotate the scan before I posted it. I think we had the same view.

Mikiek,

Thank you for your excellent observation of Aristarchus, Herodotus, and Vallis Schroter. Your second attempt is an improvement over your first one. You have recorded the depth (and steppes) of Herodotus and intricate nature of Vallis Schroter very nicely. I look forward to your future observations.

Carlos
