January Waxing Crescent Moon
      #2894823 - 01/29/09 12:48 AM Attachment (48 downloads)

As January comes to a close, I must say I am happy to see it going away. We have been having a cold and snowy winter so far with very few clear nights. However tonight I saw the sunset with Venus appearing about the same time and a beautiful two and one half day old crescent moon about 7% illuminated. As twilight deepened the earthshine presented itself quite well. Temperatures here near Chicago remain well below freezing so I made this observation out my kitchen bay window without the benefit of optical aid. By the time I gathered my sketching material the moon was already beginning to sink behind a few basswood trees along my line of sight. The moon was impressive and the comfort of indoor warmth made for ideal sketching climate.

Sketching:

Naked eye sketch out a large window
For this sketch I used: dark blue construction paper, 11”x 9”, white and black Conte’pastel pencils and a blending stump, for templating the moon as a circle I used a salt shaker bottom.. Brightness was slightly decreased after scanning.

Date: 1-28-2009 11:10-11:40 UT
clear skies
Lunation: 2.64 days
Illumination: 7 %

Beautiful and natural rendering! It reminds me of the feel of seing the moon through my former homes large overhead skylights with bare winter tree limbs overhead. A scene that I miss terribly now.

I finaly got the clearing tonight to sketfh a similar scene.

Thanks for sharing this,

Mark

Frank I enjoy looking at your sketch and how it captures the feeling of winter for me. It truly looks cold and yet in some way, inviting.

great naked eye sketch,i like the way you have the trees in there to give it some prospective, tonight venus and the crescent moon make a wonderful sight in between clouds.

Mark, Jay and Tommy5,

Thanks guys, it is very pleasant to sketch at indoor temperatures. Like Tommy5 said the view tonight is even better than last night. I caught a glimpse of the Venus Moon duo as I walked between buildings at work.

Frank,

A beautiful observation of the Waxing Crescent Moon among the limbs of a Winter tree. Your rendering provides the feeling of the season. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Very nice Frank! Simple but effective. I love the color. The blue paper was the perfect choice. I'd never thought about 'observing' from inside the house - feet up to the fireplace, looking out the window

Sure beats down jackets and thermal socks.........

Carlos and Mikiek,

Thank you both for the nice words.
I put a new bay window in my kitchen last spring to keep an eye on the whitetail deer, coyotes, red fox and so on. I never expected it to be useful for a lunar sketch. Yes the warmth was a nice change too.

Amazing, amazing!

Frank, I could not have related this sketch to your name if you hadn't posted it yourself.

A very fine naked eye sketch, Frank!

Rony,

Thank you. I'm getting soft in my old age. I made this sketch in the comfort of my home while looking out the window. I saw almost nothing of the moon last lunation. I hoping that will change this month.

Frank
