Celestron or Meade 14" vs Larger Dob
      #2899 - 06/05/03 08:51 AM

I realize that when it comes to Deep Sky, aperture and dark skies count. It appears to me that the comfort of being able to sit at the eyepiece afforded by a Celestron or Meade 14" should make up for some loss of aperture as a Dob of 18-20" would be in a similar price range (I think). Based on the articles by Jay freeman a C14 certainly can show a grerat deal. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Celestron or Meade 14" (16"?) vs a larger Dobsonian? Thanks for your thoughts,

JimP

The bigger the aperture the better. But also depends on portability needs. Meade and Celestron are big. The Meade 16" is cheap and looks and feels cheap. If you are a modifier type person and don't mind tinkering then a Meade 16" is an okay choice. I had a chance to look through one recently and wasn't that impressed though. If money is not a huge deal look at Starmaster.com. They make larger Dobs and they are truss style which are much more portable. More pricey but nice built to order telescopes. I'm not familiar with the Celestron dobs. I own an 8" and am sort of in the same situation as you. I have been looking around, sort of, for a 16" dob. Even bigger would be nice, but I would need a bigger vehicle.
