Yesterday night the Hesiodus ray was easy to see here in Europe. I observed with a 15-cm-Mak@180x. The ray was less contrasty and darker than the bright top of the mountains. I tried to show this in the sketch.

Uwe,
I really like viewing these sunlight rays myself. Sketching them is a real challenge because of how quickly they evolve. Great job on this one.

Uwe,
An excelent observation of this interesting lunar phenomena associated with the crater Hesiodus. This lunar ray is impressive when caught at the right time. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Very interesting rendering and artwork. Now I will look for this lighting effect in Hesiodus next month, thanks to your posting this! Sorry I missed this post by you earlier.
Also ironic that I just saw another interesting light ray in the crater Grimaldi for the first time on Saturday night.
I look forward to seeing your next observation and sketches.

Uwe,
Can I ask, did you just happen to catch this bright ray or did you plan in advance to sketch it, because you knew about the ray ahead of time from an ephemeris?

Dear Frank,
there exist a page in the net which gives the times of Hesiodus ray: http://www.lunar-occultations.com/rlo/rays/rays.htm
Unforunately, not all times for Europe were given. So I decided to calculate the dates by myself. In many publications Harry Jamiesons Lunar Observer's ToolKit is recommended for this, but a free version seemed not to exist. I sended Harry an email, but got not an answer.
Finally I found an old DOS version of this programs. The algorithms are correct, so you can use it without limitations:

Uwe,
Thank you very much. I do know these sites associated with ALPO and have used them in the past myself. I was just wondering if you used them or other sites or if you just happened to catch the ray by sheer good luck. You answered my question. I have stumbled on this crater sunlight rays more often by luck. It seems that when I plan in advance I'm always clouded out. Thanks.
Frank
