If you've sketched M1, would you please post the sketch and what scope you used?
Thanks, Rob

http://www.whiteoaks.com/sketches/messiersept.html Scroll down the page - it's on the 7th row of tiny sketches, on the right. These are part of my first sketches of the Messiers 12/2/1989, 10-inch f/7.3 homemade dobsonian reflector, 25mm Kellner for 74x (that was my first and only eyepiece at the time) Jane

This is down for me to do a sketch when the weather clears (soon I hope and after the moon gets out of its current bright phases).
This is a rough sketch done on white copy paper with the observation. Hope it helps.
Edit: I also thought that Jeremy Perez's sketch over at his Belt of Venus site might help (hope it is ok to link to his site):

Rob,
The images of the Crab Nebula (M1) posted above are excellent. The Crab Nebula is not an easy target to observe. Images of this famous planetary nebula are misleading in making an observer believe it to be easier to detect and study. Dark and steady skies help greatly in picking it up.
I made an observation of the nebula on February 14, 2007 using my 8-inch Klevtsov-Cassegrain (73x). I hope that this helps you.

Thanks very much Jane Jay and Carlos.
Either my skies are more LP than I thought or my eyesight is going. Borrowing Carlos's work, this is what I saw-

Rob,
Your version is closer to what the majority of observers can make out of the famous Crab Nebula. It does appear ghostly most of time. The best of luck in your future observations of it and other deep sky objects.

Rob,
Here is my impression with an ETX 105. It's not a splashy object at all.
