I was able to observe the region of Aristarchus/Herodotus/Vallis Schroter on January 9, 2009 (05:00 U.T.) using my 9-inch (23-cm) F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain at 359x under average (5/10) seeing conditions with periods of steadier seeing (6-7/10). The Moon was nearly Full (14.31 days old) with a colongitude of 81.8 degrees. Aristarchus (~25 miles (40 km) diameter) was brilliant with dusky streaks noted along it's walls (with a central brilliant peak). Herodotus (~22 miles (35 km) diameter) exhibited a dark floor with a very bright rim. Vallis Scroter (Schroter's Valley) appeared as a very bright snake northwest of Aristarchus. The area surrounding this region has a "salt-and-pepper" appearance.

Thank you for your kind compliment on my Aristarchus region observation. I was impressed by the amount of detail visible when the seeing steadied. This lunar region is interesting as the lighting changes over time. I look forward to your future observations.

A beautiful and bizarre work of art! I know I have rendered the Aristarchus crater and region in my whole moon sketches but I have never seen a rendering of it up that close. Your digital sketch is spectacular.
An artwork like this should be printed out in poster size to draw interest to new lunar observers and to promote astronomy.
Thanks for sharing this. It inspires me. I look forward to seeing your next sketch work.

great sketch Carlos, this area of the moon is one of my favorites, it really doesn't even look like the moon, an alien surface on a alien moon, anyway thanks for posting your sketch it really captures the essence of this moonscape.

Thank you all for your kind compliments on my Aristarchus region observation. Considering the nearly Full Moon present the region did exhibit some contrast as indicated (especially surrounding Schroter's Valley). I understand how the rendering may appear "bizzare" without placing it in contrast to the limb (to do so would produce a wall-sized poster). I actually noted some delicate shadings that were difficult to render. I look to everyone's observation of the Moon and other objects in the future.
