Amazing workmanship new
      #2917003 - 02/09/09 08:38 AM

Hi All. After many years of 18K dial-up internet, I recently got high-speed (well, 768K) here in the boonies of northwestern Mass, which means for the first time I can realistically participate in forums and see the photos of equipment that the ATM community has built, and I must say I'm amazed!! I'm a carpenter and cabinetmaker, I grew up in a family of carpenters, machinists, and mechanics, with a well-equipped shop in the back yard, and a father and willing uncles to teach me the trades, so for me, tripods and chairs and cases and the like are quick and easy projects, but mine is a blessed background. As I begin to look at the work done by you folks with hobbyist tools and great determination, I am more impressed every day!! I can't think of another hobby/passion that produces such fine workmanship in wood, metal, and glass, be it an EP case or roll-off. In real-life, I am often called upon to rescue homeowners in over their heads, here, even after many years of staring at the stars and creating things to aid me, I see you folks rescueing me when my dreams exceed my abilities. My hat is off to you all!!!
Clear Skies, Russ

Telescope making is a great outlet for creative energy. It is the essence of craft: a little science, a little art, some tradition, and piles of innovation. And skill always shows.

So what kinds of ATM projects are you into?

Ross

Welcome to CN, roscoe!

All those of us who aren't craftsman learn and get inspiration from those generous folks who are. And I think we might have just as much fun trying to get it right as they do!

You'll probably be interested in this thread if you want to admire peoples workmanship:

Post a picture of the scope you made:

http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1083870/page/121/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/1/vc/1

20 pages of pics that had sank to page 121 of the forum, I only found it the other night, it should be a sticky, Ive passed a few hours at work just staring at that thread.

Oh My Gosh!!!! I just looked at page 1 and had to come back to thank you for pointing this thread out to me before I lose myself in dreamland!! I spent last night looking at all the pages of the mount photos, and gathering ideas for a 2" shaft mount I'm designing and collecting parts for, and now I've got hours more of unbelievable work to look at!! Thanks Thargor, and Clear Skies! Russ

I added it to the Best of ATM.

Thanks Dave, I'm putting you in for a bonus.
