Mount ID - Synta EQ5 Alt-az?????

I have been offered an used but brand new looking Synta EQ5 Alt-Az I never heard about, it comes with wood tripod and looks pretty nice, does anybody ever heard of it?

Hi Giovanni

Well the EQ5 is a German equatorial mount.... at least to my knowledge.
Probably a good idea to look at a picture to make sure what you get.

That thing looks like it is made from EQ-5 parts. Looks dang sturdy!

If I had to guess I;d say that was an EQ5 mount adapted to form an Alt-Az mount. The EQ5 is normally an equatorial mount - that picture looks like the RA/DEC axis remounted without its 'wedge' base. The tripod isn'y Synta / Sky-Watcher it looks like it may have come from a TAL telescope or maybe even a Vixen field tripod.

In essense its a 'bitsa' as in bits from different things. Thats not to say it may not work rather well as a basic Alt-Az - in fact it looks from that pic that it would be very stable.

On the downside you'd never be able to fit any kind of tracking motors to it without a lot of work.
