Hi,
I finally had very good conditions for Saturn. I used my 6" refractor to observe Saturn and a recently acquired CED 1, (Contrast Enhancing Diagonal 1 from Burgess Optical). This was using 300x without the Chromacor II
Of note was the NEB that just popped with rift details. I have never seen the NEB break up like this.
Sketch was done with 4H, HB pencils for globe details. I used an EBONY pencil for the shadow of the rings on globe and the shadow of the globe on rings. Lots of blending using my fingers.
Best,

Sol,
Your sketching is more than terrific. You really pull in amazing detail. I note that your seeing was well above average too, fantastic work.

Frank & Uwe,
Thanks to both of you. It was an extraordinary sight after days of bitter cold and bad weather.

Sol,
An outstanding observation of Saturn. You have recorded delicate detail over both the North equatorial Belt (NEB) and South Equatorial Belt (SEB). Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Outstanding sketch, Sol! The contrast enhancing diagonal seems to be a winner.

Thanks to all of you.
The CED Type 2 diagonal did not fair so well on Saturn. It worked great on Venus, but for Saturn it simply cut too light.
For Saturn, a regular diagonal sat in between the two versions of the CEDs I havein terms of detail. That said, the type 2 version ought to work well on the Moon and the type 1, (keeping my fingers crossed), ought to work very well with Jupiter and possibly Mars.
There were a couple of years that I beta tested filters for Saturn but nothing really worked well for all details on the globe for some reason.
------------------------------------------------------------
This evening the southern hemisphere was predominantly a warm ruddy brown in terms of most belt colors. The northern showed cool gray-blue tones for the belt. Pretty sweet view for me to say the least.
When seeing allowed very sharp views, the NEB was awesome and I rendered it first and rather quickly. Thing is that the details here and throughout the northern hemisphere repeatedly showed these details throughout the observation so I could return to and refine them.
Thanks again,

I have not had the pleasure of looking at Saturn this year, but your sketch is sure a nice temporary fix to my observing starved eyes. roland
