Ghost of Jupiter
      #2937417 - 02/19/09 02:54 PM Attachment (79 downloads)

I made an observation of the Ghost of Jupiter (NGC 3242) in Hydra on February 19, 2009 (05:15 U.T.) using my 9-inch (23-cm) F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain at 78x (inset image at 352x) under average to good seeing conditions (5-7/10). The Ghost of Jupiter lies approximately 1,400 light years from the Sun. This planetary nebula has a shape that reminds an observer of the planet Jupiter where it gets it's nickname from. The Ghost of Jupiter exhibits a bluish color as noted. At higher magnification (352x) the inner shell of the nebula has an elliptical shape with a central "eye" and an outer diffuse shell. This is one of my favorite planetary nebulas to observe.

A digital image produced using Photoshop CS3.

bloody fantastic sketch. You really captured exactly how it looks at the eyepiece, colour and all. Best rendition of the Ghost of Jupiter I've seen.

Carlos,

Very impressive dual sketch.
I would like this one as much as the Eskimo if it was just a little higher in my sky. I like the way you rendered it in full color.

Frank

Thank you all for the compliment on my Ghost of Jupiter observation. This is one of my favorite DSO's to observe. I have been fortunate to have observed it through a 30-inch Dobsonian reflector at the Winter Star Party some time ago. The best of luck to you all in your own observations.

Sol,

Thank you for the compliment on my Ghost of Jupiter observation. As you may note no Great Red Spot was visible! I look forward to your future observations.

Carlos,

Wow! Isn't that a mighty sketch!

The difference between low and high magnification is very well displayed.

Carlos,

Just a super job, done well enough that if I can get out between the head cold and aches and the clouds this week, I would have it on my observation list. Thanks for showing it with such detail.

Have you ever looked on NGC 2440? Though not as bright I think it is truly wonderful at high magnification.

I've never seen this object, that is really fascinating how it looks spherical at low magnification and "eye" like at high magnification.

Thanks for sharing! I may have to look for it the next time I'm out (whenever that may be...though we need the rain so I'm not going to complain too loudly).

Jay, Jim, Roland, and Rony

Thank you all for the compliments on my Ghost of Jupiter observation. This planetary nebula is fascinating. It glows within the constellation Hydra as a bluish green orb but at higher magnification displays the appearance of an eye.

Jay- I have not observed NGC 2440 in Puppis yet. This appears to be an interesting planetary nebula as well. I will have to review it soon.

Nice drawing of this show piece planetary nebula. When the seeing is steady, it looks just like your drawing at 375X through my 10-inch.
