Quote:
And I was told it uses a porro prism whereas most modern day spotting scopes use roof prisms.
Because this is a really classic spotting scope a Porro is okay Love it or leave it

The salesman at Scope City claimed that in some cases, porro prisms are as good, if not better than roof prisms.

So if this scope ever goes back on sale for $599, is it worth buying?
It comes with a nice brown suede pouch for the scope. The wooden tripod and az mount is nicely made. The whole thing has a quality look about it that made it stand out from all the modern spotting scopes it was sitting next to. I now wish I had taken the time to look through it.

"Winkelprismas" What a delightful word! Makes astronomy sound like Christmas time!

Hmmmmm.....maybe I can talk them into letting me have it for the sale price. After all, with today's lousy economy, it's a buyer's market.

Myself and at least 1 other member here bought one for $599. I bet they sold a few and then decided they could get more, so they raised the price. Last I was in there, they had 20-24 left.
These are great spotting scopes. But, maybe not so great astro scopes. The problem is the focus at "infinity" is basically all the way in. The focus travel is also very short..I have not measured it, but I would say maybe 45-50mm. So, adding a diagonal or even using certain .965" EP's has been problematic. Even adding a .965" to 1.25" adapter does not even come close to working.
The other member who purchased one has tried barlows without success. Harry Siebert and I have exchanged several emails on the problem and he says he has a solution, but it is non-refundable
Does anyone here own an Asiola and have a solution?
Thanks!

I would never use it for astronomy. It's just such a cool looking precision instrument that I'd love to own one.
You say switching out eyepieces is problematic. You mean using a higher power doesn't come to focus?

And mount them on Howie Glatters PST Bino Plattform In Autumn 2005 I had the honor to meet him on Emberger Alm, Austria, a nice guy!
