Eskimo Nebula (February 19, 2009) new
      #2937352 - 02/19/09 02:19 PM Attachment (58 downloads)

I made an observation of the famous Eskimo Nebula (NGC 2392) in Gemini on February 19, 2009 (04:00 U.T.) using my 9-inch (23-cm) F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain at 352x under average to good seeing conditions (5-7/10). The Eskimo Nebula is a bipolar, double-shell planetary nebula that is estimated to be >1,060 years old and is approximately 3,000 light years distant. It was discovered by the famous German-born English astronomer William Herschel in 1787. The inner shell is elliptical and bright with two blister-like potrusions (extensions) over it's southern section and measures 18" x 15". The outer shell measures 24" and consists of complex low-ionization features.

Carlos,

To use a word from the time of Shakespeare, this is a pulchritudinous sketch of a favorite planetary nebula. You are using the perfect scope to get a large detailed look.

Carlos,

Another wonderful sketch! I really enjoy Planetary Nebula. Have you ever observed NGC 1535 in Eridanus? Some say it is similar to the Eskimo. I did an observation tonight of it and a sketch. If you like the Eskimo, you'd like this one.

Here is a link to a photograph:

Thanks for sharing and good luck in each of your observations and sketches.

Excellent sketch! I "discovered" this nebula with my
8" Newtonian two days ago and your sketch shows rellay well what can be seen .

Thank you all for the compliments on my Eskimo Nebula observation. This is one of my favorite planetary nebula to observe. I find the detail noted at higher magnification very interesting.

Jay- The image of NGC 1535 in Eridanus that you provided does give the appearance of the Eskimo Nebula. I will have to examine this planetary in detail soon. Thank you for the suggestion.

The best of luck in your own observations.

Carlos

Excellent rendition of the Nebula... Very realistic to the views I've experienced over the years.
