Huntress and the Scorpion new
      #2935045 - 02/18/09 12:37 PM Attachment (39 downloads)

I was able to view the Waning Crescent Moon (22.7 days old) within the head of Scorpius on February 17, 2009 (11:45 U.T.). The Moon (Artemis-Diana (Greek) or Selene (Roman), Huntress and Goddess of the Moon) was brightly visible (-11.08m) within the Scorpion on the morning sky over the southern horizon. Antares (1.03m) was a red beacon east of the Moon.

A digital image produced using Photoshop CS3.

Great sketch of the moon and Antares, any mention of Antares makes me think of soft warm summer nights, something for me to think about as more snow is falling out of my cold overcast skies, thanks for posting.

Carlos,

A beautiful glowing sketch of the moon in the southeast superimposed on the scorpion. You have created a grand view.

Frank

Carlos,

I really enjoy observing each of your sketches. This one has such a wonderful contrast between the red of Antares and the white of the waning moon. Thank you for sharing this one.

Nice rendition. Was the light from the moon bright enough that you could only catch those few stars in the image? I'm wondering how much the "light pollution" prevented you from seeing more, of if you only chose to identify the brightest ones?

Jay, Jim, and Rony

Thank you all for the kind compliments on my Moon and Antares observation. It was a beautiful scene with the Waning Crescent Moon and red Antares nearby. The light of the Moon did dim the fainter stars in the field but I also chose not to include all the stars visible and recorded the brightest ones instead.

Carlos
