It's official!

"Tamdakht" is the official name of the new Moroccan fall on December 20, 2008. And the official classification is an H5 chondrite. The new Meteoritical Bulletin entry was just posted.

http://tin.er.usgs.gov/meteor/index.php?code=48691

One more witnessed fall to collect. (I already have it.)

Boy Mike - You're right on the ball - hot off the press.
I see it turned out to be rated an H-5, earlier info was about H-4, so that was almost right on. That is a fresh one.

A couple months from fall to classification is pretty darn fast isn't it ?

Witnessed falls tend to get classified quicker than finds. I guess it's the increased interest and attention these falls garner. But, even considering the extra interest, this was a fast classification and publication.

I don't know if I posted this here already, but the Buzzard Coulee fall is now official as well -

http://tin.er.usgs.gov/meteor/metbull.php?code=48654

Unlike Tamdakht, nonsensical Canadian laws will prevent any Buzzard Coulee from legally entering the United States (and elsewhere outside Canada) for at least another 6 months. I say the Canadian laws are "nonsensical" because they are illogical and self-defeating. Heck, Coulee is one of over 3000 classified H4 common chondrites - it is not helping science to prohibit it's export. And Canadian culture wouldn't be robbed by allowing it out either - science and cultural heritage loss being the two major justifications for these absurd laws. But that is another story and I digress.

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG

And I do agree with you on The Import/Export Laws from Canada.
I would Love to have a piece or 5 of Buzzard Coulee.

The Buzzard Coulee has to be one of the cooler names.
I'm just glad they didn't name it Jed's Cow Pond or something like that as it was first found in a small watering hole.
Buzzard Coulee has enough yee haw too it anyway but still sounds neat. Hopefully late this year we might see some available.
Calling dibs now with our favored vendors should they get some in the future .

I will let you know the moment I receive any(leaglly)and place a hold on some of this specimen for you.

I would imagine that Mike G. Would Also Say The Same(However I will let him answer for himself,so I dont place words in his mouth).

I am actually excited and looking forward to receiving some of this specimen. These Fresh Finds are Exciting Pieces To Track Down And Purchase.

I am still excited about Tamdahkt, and excited about the specimens found in Texas within the last week.

Its an exciting time in Meteorite collecting right now.

Hi Dick,

That is Philippe Thomas' page - right now, he has some of the biggest and nicest Tamdakt specimens on the market.

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG

Buzzard Coulee is a very cool name.

It ranks right up there with Old Woman, Camel Donga, and Millbillillie.

Coulee will have to work it's way through the maze of legal paperwork before it hits the market. I figure about 6 more months. Maybe a bit less since it's a common type and not scientifically-interesting like Tagish Lake.

I saw a piece of the new West Texas fall for sale this morning. It wasn't cheap and it's one of those situations where - "If you have to ask, you can't afford it..."

West Texas is already on the market but only in a very limited way. Hunters are still combing the area and compiling accurate strewnfield data. At this point the majority of the hunters who have found specimens are not selling them - many will never be sold. However, private landowners are in possession of this meteorite as well, and some of their stones might show up on the market soon - prices will be hard to predict because laypeople outside the hobby/field often have inflated expectations of value. Preliminary reports are pointing towards a common chondrite for West Texas, so if it's another H-type chondrite, the eventual asking price should be reasonable.

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG

I got my personal piece of Tamdakht from Philippe.

Since there is no meteorite label for it from Roman yet, I use Philippe's original specimen card as a display label in the Riker box. Philippe is one of those rare dealers whose specimen cards are sized to fit in the lower half of a 3x4" Riker box. I don't know whether he designed them that way, or if it's by chance. But it's a nice little added bonus.

Best regards,

MikeG

I must admit I did like the feel of holding such a Fresh and Recent Fall In your Hands(Tamdakht).

If I were in better physical shape and had enough income to pay the bills,I would Love To Be A Meteorite Hunter.
I know its not as glamorous as most would think but I believe I could deal with it.
