Well, I was laid up last week with a really bad head cold and this weekend and today my back has been out so I missed a terrific Friday night.

So I've been playing some more with Gimp and learning more of its features. Here is my digital image of my observation of NGC 2440 that I observed on 2/20/09 at 10:00p.m. MST. I posted a copy of the sketch inverted over on the Deep Sky Observing thread. Quite easy to find and the PN was bluish/white and I used high magnification on it. At 92x the PN faded with direct vision but averted brought it right in. At 266x I had the best view that night. I saw the diffused bluish hue that was a ball or roundish shape. No central star was visible but I did catch a glimpse here and there of two lobes to the right and left of the PN.

Overall I feel I am improving in Gimp. I like what I did with the Planetary, though the stars continue to frustrate me. I use the pencil and have them selected to be founded but they come out more like an octagon. I need to figure that out. Also, I did a very rookie mistake. I got so much into my observing I forgot to label my coordinates so I put west where I believe I remember it being.

Here is the sketch:

Jay,

Beautiful sketch. I have never tracked this planetary nebula down. It seems to respond nicely to higher magnification.

Frank

Jay,

An excellent observation (rendering) of this very interesting planetary nebula in Puppis. At the center of this planetary nebula lies one of the hottest white dwarfs known (200,000 Kelvins). Images of this planetary nebula resolve it's bipolar aspect. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

I agree with you that your skills using Gimp are improving. I believe that the "octagonal" problem that you have may be resolved by playing with the Brush Editor (Windows>Dockable Dialogs>Brushes>New Brush).

Frank and Carlos,

Thanks for your comments. Carlos, yes, I'm having the issue with the stars appearing "octagonal." You nailed it. I will try to adjust the stars with your tip. Thanks!
