6th Annual Harmony Dark Sky Festival
http://www.darkskyfestival.com/
"...We had approximately 2,800 attend our Festival last year and anticipate this year’s attendance to exceed 3,500 people."
Saturday April 25th 2009 between 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
FREE ADMISSION, FREE PARKING!
I live about more than an hour away and several times at outreach events this year people have mentioned to me of their own accord (un-prompted by me) that they'd been to the Harmony Dark Sky Festival event and how much they liked it (i.e. it impacts a lot of people positively.)
Although I like to think the Universe, and secondly our scopes :^), are the main attractions, there are a number of featured speakers (see link above for details.)
The Florida Institute of Technology will also have their portable planetarium, StarLab, to demonstrate the night sky (and other stuff.)
World famous musician Jonn Serrie will perform ambient space music (if your are curious about what he plays you can hear free samples of his work at amazon.com MP3 Downloads.)
Members of area amateur astronomy clubs will be setting up telescopes.
Aside from promoting dark sky awareness and the negative impact of light pollution, they state "...This event allows people to see objects in the sky and have someone there to guide them. People line up to look through the scopes. In fact, a solar viewing scope will be put into service before sunset."
It wouldn't surprise me if members of the media would be there too (it's happened before.)
It being the International Year of Astronomy 2009, it's a great opportunity to help many to get their first view of the sky through a telescope (a big objective of IYA '09), and locally it's our biggest outreach opportunity so far this year.
Come and have fun!
Clear and dark skies, Jason H.

I just saw a twitter post (I don't know the source of this message) on the http://www.darkskyfestival.com/ website that they are interested in getting e-mails from those amateurs who are attending "...CALLING ALL ASTRONOMERS...RSVP you are coming to our event. We'll feed you!! RSVP to info@darkskyfestival.com"
Also, television station WFTV has it on their event calendar

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED AND HELPED SUPPORT IYA '09 EVENTS IN FLORIDA!
It seems that the schools are re-envigorated with Astronomy outreach requests, the public is excited about Astronomy, and Central Florida Astronomical Society (a listed IYA '09 Supporter Organization) is going into 2010 with a very busy outreach agenda. The 2009 events I attended were very well populated, the biggest being the Harmony Dark Sky Festival with a reported 5000 people in attendance, and (of course) the public is very interested in Astronomy. I like to think of space exploration as an extension of Astronomy, and at year-end I went to Kennedy Space Center where there was quite massive public attendance, with lines everywhere, 30 minute waits for the continuously loading tour buses (all day until the last bus!) that do the drive-by of the VAB, and live show presenters, massive Saturn V rocket, launch pad view, and ISS processing facility), and a worker told me they were getting at least 10,000 people a day that week (and it seemed like a lot more from my perspective!) People I spoke to were very enthusiastic about Astronomy and were hungry for more Astronomy information.
I'm excited at the possibilities for the future, and satisfied that we've reached so many people in such a short time in 2009. I hope to increase my efforts in 2010. Just one person can help so many get their first views through the telescope. DO IT AGAIN IN 2010!
And thanks again to all!!!! Jason Higley
