Comet Lulin and Regulus new
      #2955840 - 02/28/09 10:59 PM Attachment (56 downloads)

I made an observation of Comet Lulin (C/2007 N3) on February 28, 2009 (07:00 U.T.) using my 11 x 56 mm Oberwerk binoculars. The coma of the comet appeared spherical with a pencil-thin ion tail behind it. The comet was located approximately one degree from Regulus (1.34m). It's magnitude is estimated at this time to be 6.3m.

Your digital renderings are stunning, Carlos, just as your pencil sketches are. Beautifully done.

Carlos,

Beautiful sketch of comet Lulin. Your capture of the visitor is stunning. This really is a nice comet to observe.
I got my first "good look" tonight after moonset. It is getting very cold here so I made a quick sketch. I was out observing the moon from twilight until it moonset. That allowed the comet time to reach nearly 58 degrees in altitude before I turned my attention to Lulin.
Here is my (inverted graphite) sketch

C/2007 N3 (Lulin)
March 1, 2009 4:30-5:00 UT
Magnitude aprox. 6.2
Transparency 4/5
Seeing 8/10
Wind 15 mph
Temp -6C (22F)
Scope 108mm f/6 24mm eyepiece 27x

Ah!! Great catches. Weather had us socked in but I am sure glad you folks got the "conjunction". Great fun to catch this one passing notable objects and stars.

Thank you all for the kind compliments on my Comet Lulin observation. It is an interesting comet with it's spherical coma and thin ion tail. I hope that you all get to observe it as well.

Frank- Thank you for your excellent observation of Comet Lulin. You have recorded the coma and tail very nicely.

Carlos

great sketch carlos lots of detail in the coma and tail, Frank, great sketch also, i saw this comet as a very dim blob, with all of the lp here near chicago, the night was very clear and cold, i remember the comet was in a triangle of stars it was very faint slightly brighter with averted vision, no tail visible never would have even saw it without knowing exactly where it was, thanks for posting.

Carlos and Frank, wonderful sketchwork. I think those 11x56 binoculars allowed Carlos to see the big outer envelope that surrounds the coma of Lulin. I had noticed that once I switched from my 12x36 binoculars to a telescope (even at low power) the envelope seemed to disappear. Frank's rendering at 27x is what I saw with 108mm of aperture at about 20x. Nice work, guys!

Michael and Tommy,

Thank you for your compliments on my Comet Lulin and Regulus observation. The core of the comet was easily visible in the binocular field whereas the outer coma and ion tail required averted vision. The best of luck in your own observations of the comet.

Carlos

A brief break in my weather allowed me to make observation of Comet Lulin (C/2007 N3) on March 2, 2009 (04:30 U.T.) using my 11 x 56 mm Oberwerk binoculars. The coma was prominent and spherical in shape with a long, thin ion tail (more readily visible using averted vision). The comet appeared a bit brighter to my eyes tonight compared to my previous observations.

Carlos,

Yet another beautiful sketch you have posted. With the moonlight getting stronger each evening the best comet observation may well be past. I am happy you had clear skies to get this one in with your binoculars.

Thank you.

Frank,

Thank you for the compliment on my latest observation of Comet Lulin. I believe this was my best observation of the comet (detail over the coma and tail) to date. Unfortunately, as you point out, the Moon will interfere with the visibility of this wispy comet from now on. I hope that we can all keep following it anyway.

Carlos and Frank

Very nice sketch work by both of you. I had planned to do one recently but relegated to the inner city light pollution now, I did not feel it worthy to only render a slight elongated ethereal smudge of light. I long for my dark sky site of thirty years now.

You two may have inspired me to take a drive to my old neighborhood of darkness tonight.

Thanks for keeping us updated with your fine posts.

Tom and Mark,

Thank you both for your positive words. Comets are worth a close look when they come in this close and get this bright.

Mark and Tom,

Thank you both for the compliment on my Comet Lulin observations. This celestial interloper is interesting as it flies through our skies. Comets are always worth examining as they all exhibit unique qualities. The best of luck in your own osbervations of the comet.

Mark- I really like your new web site. It contains all of your wonderful observations (art).
