Messier Marathons new
      #2965 - 06/05/03 09:33 PM Attachment (81 downloads)

Hi:

How many people participate in Messier Marathons every year?

I've been looking around the Internet to see how this information is collected and reported. One place that will accept reports is
Messier Marathon reporting (SEDS)

Does anyone report their results to the Astronomical League?

The Astronomical League

Out here in Arizona, we're really lucky to have people who spend a lot of time organizing the Marathon, reporting the results, and passing out certificates or plaques.

A big thank you to A.J. Crayon and Jack Jones for keeping us Arizonans organized. People who observe 50 or more objects on our Marathon night get a certificate. People who observe all that's possible on the night of our Marathon receive a nice plaque to mount on their telescopes.

Clear skies,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Well I'm not an every year kind of guy, but I have done a few. Of course I cheated on the last one I did since I now have the NexStar11. My previous Marathons were star hopping, but I went GOTO on the last one. Still had problems with M30 at the very end...that sucker is very dim in the morning twilight.

Clear skies,
Jeff
