Suggestions for a Semi Permanent Pier new
      #2887346 - 01/25/09 04:07 PM

I am considering building a mobile observatory mounted on a trailer.

The telescopes to be used will be either larger SCTs or refractors.

I wish to have a pier that one can lower to the ground while in use but still have the ability to raise and lock in place while moving.

What suggestions or examples do you suggest for a pier that would meet these critera?

Thanks

Do you something that will lower to the ground through a hole in the trailer?

No. I'm just trying to picture what you have in mind.

Larry Myers at Mountain Instruments is working on a dual-use pier that sounds like it'll be even more solid than his HD transportable pier. You might want to give him a call.

Thanks for the lead.

To clarify the request, the pier I will need is one that will need to be movable.

The trailer will be pulled to the observing site, the pier lowered and secured, the OTA mounted, observing occurs, the OTA is removed, the pier is raised and locked for transport and then the trailer is pulled home.

Any examples of transportable piers?

Thanks

The AP portable piers are rock solid. They are a bit of a pain to assemble and break down. The 6" Eagle Pier is a folding design.

Wow, I could have some serious fun with that mobile observatory! I think my retirement goals have just changed.
