I'm done retrofitting my Skyview Deluxe with Autostar and it's ready for final assembly. Everything is clean and shiny and sitting there ready to go back together.
The Chinese Weasel Grease is all gone...what's the secret sauce I want to use instead?

googled for the superlube and mounts and got a lot of hits. looks like this stuff is THE stuff. of course, anything beats the chinese weasel grease. gack is that stuff sticky.

Another Super Lube Vote
If you can't find it at a local hardware or auto store, the link above is a good supplier. My local Ace hardware, HomeDepot and NAPA Auto Parts didn't have any in stock. So I stocked up on it from the link above.

Super-Lube is the one that we use on most items, especially gear trains. For the general market there is nothing better. I used Mobil One red and it became too stiff for the motors in my Gemini GI-1 at about +10F. The latter is designed for high speed applications and does not redistribute well at ultra low speeds.

unfortunately for me imaging in +10 is not that unusual in the winter. I think i'll go with the recommendation for the superlube.

For some reason Super-Lube didn't run real smooth in my CG-5. I stripped it and reloaded it with acme thread grease I got from McMaster-Carr (Nook Industries # NLU-1001). It is a terrific low speed surface bearing grease. My worm gears I have lubed with high PTFE synthetic bicycle grease $$$.

found superlube at True Value, haven't regreased the mount yet but tried it out elsewhere and it is pretty danged slippery and far less sticky than my current grease.

It has PTFE (Teflon) in it so it will be nice and slippery, and will seem less "sticky".

In most cases, where SuperLube Grease hasn't performed up to expectations, the problem is that the prior lube wasn't completely removed. A toothbrush dipped into mineral spirits is the usual drill, and I've redone mounts where it took three or four passes to completely clean the gear teeth. IMHO, mineral spirits is the ONLY acceptable solvent (with the exception of the incredibly expensive Tower 99) to remove grease. Acetone, lacquer thinner, and soap-based products aren't. MEK is OK in a pinch.
If the bicycle grease works for you, fine, but I doubt it has the additives appropriate for helical gearsets. ACME thread grease may work, but ACME threads are cut differently from standard threads, and are generally designed for intermittent use, an application completely different from worm sets.
Mobil makes exceptional products, however, its synthetic grease has a Lithium soap-based thickener, with its drawbacks for astronomy.
BTW, I'm a recovering lube and fuels engineer (with a major oil company), and spent 30 years in the Navy Reserve as one of two nationwide...my mantra is: "Oil's cheaper than metal."

Another vote for super lube, its made 2 miles from my house, this stuff is awsome, I've used it on mounts,focusers,drawtubes on cats and its improves(lowers the image shift when used on were the mirror slides up n down on the drawtube), the temp range is perfect, wont gum up, its THE STUFF!

Dow 33 Molykote, -100F to 400F. Great for real bearings and drive gears, but don't expect it to fill 0.050" gaps or act as an adhesive between badly machined parts. For that you need the special sticky cat grease.

Makes sense to me, that would explain why the Super Lube worked well the first application but not after I tried the acme screw grease. Next time I've got reason to be in the mount I'll try a little more rigorous cleaning, I probably missed some in my last stripping as I really like the idea of high PTFE greases. I did misspeak, the bike grease I'm only using on the reduction spur gears.
