I was pleasantly surprised to see the Google logo last night with craters drawn in place of the double-O. It wasn't till this morning that I allowed the cursor to float over the logo, that Giovanni Shiaparelli's Birthday info came up.
Inspiration for a good night to draw some lines for a cause. (If you know the Canals on Mars story in history that eventually captured Percival Lowell too.)
Today, I want to draw a Face on Mars!

Mark,
Planetary astronomy owes a great debt to the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910). His description of linear features noted over the surface of Mars during the 1877 Mars Opposition as canali was mistranslated to channels and therefore sparking the life on Mars controversy. Schiaparelli postulated that the Comet Temple-Tuttle with the Leonid meteor shower (peak on November 17).
Happy Birthday Giovanni Schiaparelli!

Yes; thank you for posting the Wikipedia links to the history of Shiaparelli. I meant to do that and in a rush, I forgot to post the links. Truly amazing and admirable history that we should glean from Shiaparelli.
Thanks again,
Mark
