My gawd, that BLUE!
Needs a repaint.
I'd like a nice old Cave someday, but not anywhere near the bin price.

Actually, I thought the blue looked pretty nice with the white tube.

Is it the original color, perhaps?
If so, I'd leave it. But I just don't remember one that color before.

Have not seen one of these in a while....
Nikon 65mm
Seems to be priced at the top of what you might pay for a perfect one fully loaded.

I answered this ad ... basically the ad said "Unitron telescope - $75" I contacted the guy and I ended up buying it for $50. It was a Unitron 62mm Refractor (900mm fl) on an alt-azimuth mount with a folding wood tripod. The Refractor came in a wooden case with 3 eyepieces (1 has broken lenses), a porro prism (lacking one or more of the internal prisms) and a lens shade. The optical tube has some blemishes in the paint but is not dented or otherwise gouged or scraped. The finderscope is missing but the brackes are present. At first look, it appeared that the optical tube had rusted through the creme paint but when I took some windex to the exterior - all the rust spots came right off!!! I was shocked. The clamshell needs some new felt. In the case some of the wooden supports need new felt and an/or regluing but other than that, the case is pretty much intact although it may need a new coat of wax and some TLC. One of the screws holding the stop on the tripod leg was missing but I found 6 near perfect matching SS screws and SS locknuts and replaced all of them so they all would match. The mount and tripod and optical tube are all perfectly functional. The objective is in perfect condition and not scratched or damaged in any way.
I took it out and the views were rather wonderful! I would say that I got a rather wonderful telescope for only $50.
My onely question is how may I use 1.25" eyepieces with it. It appears to have a drawtube that could accommodate 1.25" eyepieces with a collar on the end for .965.
Any suggestions or assistance would be much appreciated.
BTW ... what is this beast worth?
Thanks

Well obviously a heck of a lot more than you paid for it! I purchased a 62mm Unitron 114 on Craigslist last year. It is mid 1950's I believe. The OTA mounts to a cradle not a clam shell. One dent in the optical tube, a few scratches in the paint, 9mm eyepiece looks like a fern leaf or moss agate, (fractured element), the finder reticle looks like it melted (bubbly), and both cases are pretty cracked. After packing and shipping I think I have about $450 in it. Probably way too much but, I just love it. I would say I got a wonderful scope for just $450
Welcome to the classics forum, Steven. You are one of a flurry of people recently catching incredible telescope deals. Last week a new member bought a Zeiss for $150 on Craigslist. Now you and your new $50 Uni! Good work.
I have one hybrid .965 X 1.25 star diagonal that I use to convert the old classics to accept larger eyepieces with. The funny thing is I have no good 1.25 eyepieces really. A few Meade Plossls, and some old Celestron stuff. My best eyepieces are .965 but it is work seeing through them. Using newer eyepieces certainly enhances the experience. Soon someone will no doubt post a better way to use 1 1/4" eyepieces in your new scope. Listen to them. I'm only here now 'cause Saturn just "set" behind a big fir tree on the west edge of my place. Hmmm, maybe tomorrow I'll fall the tree and add an hour to my time with Saturn...

Is that 4"unitron on eBay right now from someone here? Looks familiar (and rather purdy).

Does the focuser tag really say this is 50mm X 1200mm ? ? ! ! as in f24 or am I losing it much faster than my medical chart notes would suggest?
OK, the question really is, what do you see when you read the label?

HERE is a portable 40mm spotting scope on E-vilbay, my guess for targeting? Very cool none the less.

Hi Gang!
This thread has reached epic proportions, so let's wrap up any lingering discussion and I will lock this thread and create a new one. After 10 or 12 pages, these threads start getting cumbersome they load slow for some users.
Best regards and clear skies,
