I was able to view the spectacular launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-119) on March 15, 2009 (07:43 P.M. EDT) from South Florida. This was the most beautiful launch of the Space Shuttle that I have seen from South Florida to date. Discovery lit up the northern twilight sky with a multitude of colors. The section surrounding the Space Shuttle was a brilliant red-orange color with flashes of white. The launch trail following the shuttle was a pale orange-yellow with the tail of the trail a pastel orange color being sheared apart.
The Space Shuttle Discovery carries seven astronauts including a Japanese astronaut (Koichi Wakata) who will be part of the crew of the International Space Station (ISS) until May, 2009. The mission (STS-119) is to deploy the last two solar arrays (115 feet (35-meters) long each) of the International Space Station (ISS). STS-119 is scheduled to return on March 28, 2009 at 01:43 PM EDT.
I was very lucky to see this wonderful view of the pace Shuttle Discovery being launched. I hope that others in the region got to view the event as well.

Rich,
Thank you for the compliment on my Discovery launch observation. I was in the right place and at the right time to be able to witness this impressive launch. I hope to catch many more launches (The new Ares V rocket is supposed to be bigger than the Saturn V which was a very impressive sight in the Florida sky)
