Widefield planetary stuff from 2008

Ok, these are "old news" but I finally had some time to go back through a bunch of snaps from last year and pulled out a few keepers. These four were shot from August through late December 2008 and are my best captures of the fantastic planetary dance that took place in the evening skies.

Up first are Mars, Mercury and Venus from 30 Aug 08.

Next up are Venus, Jupiter and the Moon from 1 Dec 08. I missed the closest approach due to clouds but at least got a taste the night before.

In late December, Venus, Jupiter and Mercury were jointed by the crescent moon. These two shots are two nights apart and show the rapid relative motion between the Moon and Venus and between Jupiter and Mercury.

Here is the view on 29 Dec 08. You can "just" pick out Mercury below Jupiter in the lower right part of the frame.

And two nights later on the 31st. Not a bad way to ring out the old year!

Clear skies.
