Saturn in excellent seeing!
      #2993420 - 03/19/09 09:43 PM Attachment (157 downloads)

I can't begin to explain how rare this is up here! Very good seeing happens like 10 times a year and fair to good is the norm. Excellent seeing is unheard of! Probably explains why there are so few planetary imagers in Norway!

Too bad my DMK is still in the post

Anyway, my best image to date! (Resized 150%)

Steve

Thanks, so do I I can drag out a bit more detail but then with more noise. I'll settle for a smoother image.

Thanks!

Yes, Im now very happy with the telescope. When I first got it, I compared it to my friends Orion 6LT. The 6LT had no problems following the 2x more expensive Europa and it didn't require any mods - NOT impressed!!! Now I know that when the seeing is good, the Europa will pull ahead. And it doesn't matter what magnification Im using, the image just snaps into focus. I can't say the same about the 6LT

Hi!

I read your reply in my post!
You have some really nice pictures here!
I can see that the seeing must have been outstanding!

Also nice to see that you can get a nice result as that with an 150mm Newtonian!

I also have an OO Newton, my 8" is a f/6, I guess it will produce a "softer" image, compared to your 6" f/8.
Like you, I had to modify some things on my scope, before I was satisfied with it:

http://www.astrogotland.se/replace_focuser.htm

and:

http://www.astrogotland.se/centre_mark_mirror.htm

I havenīt had an opportunity to really try it out yet, due to our EXTREMELY bad weather conditions here in the Baltic sea...

I am also curious to find out what difference the 1/4 PTV mirror in my 8" scope will make compared to my friends OO 8" 1/6 PTV, when imaging the planets!
As you wrote, it is a matter of the seeing conditions too...

At last, again: very nice pictures you got there!
Thanks for sharing!

Hjertlig hilsen fra Gotland!

//Roger!

Tusen takk Roger!

Yes good seeing is very important. Unfortunately we rarely get that up here

Im actually thinking about upgrading to your telescope. I love the OO optics but Im not fussed on some of the mechanics and design.

I am currently redoing the site so all my latest images can be found here.

Chris: My scope is an older one, bought from the widescreen centre in London.
Its the black tube, with a two legged secondary support(!).
It has the same mirror cell as your scope, a 1/4 PTV mirror and originally a very tragical 1,25" focuser.

They had it up on sale for 399Ģ, including a Vixen GPE.
As you say: the optics are great, but the design and mechanics are done "the British way"... -functional, but crude.

I had expected more from my Vixen ED100SF as an imaging scope but I guess that Saturn is a hard target for a "smaller" scope , due to its great distance and small apparent f.o.v. On the other hand, it excels on the Moon with extremely sharp and crisp images. And its a great allrounder!

The major advantage with an OO Newtonian, is besides the good optics, its low weight due to the aluminium tube.

I attach a picture of the scope on the Vixen GPE. As you can see, its a rather big scope. But due to its lightweight tube, the GPE handles it fairly for visual use.

/Roger.

Thank you all - keep wishing the good weather this way!

Roger,
I had a 10 inch once so your 8 inch is tiny! Nah, I know. Same length but considerably more bulk. Im still on the fence about upgrading. I really like what I have now, but that might all change when Mars comes back (aperture RULES man!!!)!
