Info needed on Tal (Novosibirsk) MT-3S mount
      #2995707 - 03/21/09 08:44 AM Attachment (96 downloads)

Hi.
I'm in need of some info on the following mount from Tal in Novosibirsk, Russia.

I have this mount on order and need to make an alluminium plate to fit on top of the dec axis, which will then hold a saddle clamp.
I therefore need the following.
1/ The size(length and width)of the dec mounting plate.
2/ The spacing between the 2 threaded thumbscrews, centre to centre.
3/ Size of the thumbscrews, eg: M6, M8 ??

Many thanks,
Andy.

Danke Martin.
This company in England have some in stock. Link below.

http://www.widescreen-centre.co.uk/Catalogue/Equatorial%20Non-Computerized.html

It is a package of the MT-3S mount and the wooden Tal tripod. I'll be mounting mine on a steel pier eventually.
I already have the big Tal mount(Tal 2M), on a 5ft steel pier,

I have always wanted this MT-3S, but could never find one. At the price offered, I couldn't say no, especially as the supplied tripod is on sale in the UK at £80 !

Cheers,
Andy.

here´s your link with the drawing + thanks for your help. scroll down a little bit. and: there´s a (sophisticated) atm mounting plate design on the next page. i´ll post the width of the plate in the next few hours.

plate width ist 66.5 mm

there´s another option:

detach the plate and attach a dovetail adapter:

http://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p1536_Prismenklemme---GP-Level---Basis-fuer-Schnellkupplung.html

should fit, spacing between the holes (tal) is appr. 36mm. the adapter has 35mm. 0.5 mm per side, a little drilling will do. there´s enough space for the adapter.

greets, martin

Thanks again Martin.
I have that very dovetail adapter and have thought of doing that also.

Cheers,
Andy.

Well the mount arrived. Very pleased with it.
Would you believe that the Tal 200K scope already comes with a huge dovetail, that fits the mount head perfectly.....fantastic.
I'll still make up another adapter so my other scopes can be used on it too.
Thanks for your help anyway Martin. Interesting link to the Tal Russian forum. Lots of useful info on there, after running it through a translator.
Some pics,

Cheers,
Andy.

Just made up an adapter to hold the Telescope service saddle on the Tal MT-3S mount. This will let me use my other scopes with standard dovetails on this mount too.
A T-S dovetail I had, has the perfect hole spacing to fit the MT-3S mount. I only needed to thread the holes M8. The saddle needed 2 holes, again threaded M8.

Rather pleased.

Will the weather cooperate now

Cheers,
Andy.

Sure looks great, mount and scope!

If weather and time permit, would you be in for posting a
PErecording of this mount?

Clear skies,

Andy,

I had that mount for a time, I used it for a 4" f15 refractor.

For a mounting plate, I used a pretty simple approach. I simply made a plate out of 1" maple (any good hardwood will do), drilled holes in the plate to match the mounting holes on the top plate of the mount. I then attached that to the mount with a couple of bolts through both of them secured by a nut. I fit the nuts into a wooden knob with epoxy.

Painted black id didn't look half bad.

It was simple to make and the materials were very inexpensive.

Here is a shot of that set up.
