Observation Note: The wonder of the created heavens is accentuated by complex objects such as NGC 4490 and 4485. We had never looked at it before but it was a treat to sketch together as we studied it. Video frames were fluctuating in quality because of the haze, so we would grab general shapes when the frames were not so good but then record detail from the better frames when the atmosphere was steadier. The link is to the members galleries since the scan of the sketch is a little large to get posted here.

Galaxies in Play

The Lesson: A star is magnificent in itself, but to have the opportunity in a back yard to study an apparent galaxy interaction where millions of stars are presented reminds me of Jesus' statement to those who had committed their life to him: 'I will not leave you or forsake you'. The intricacies of these sky objects is like an 'in your face' reminder of God's large but also detailed attention to things. So the sustainer of the universe also cares for little ones as small as these two sketchers who tried to capture the object for a few minutes.

It was a good night to give thanks.

Roland (and Linda)

Roland and Linda,

Excellent observations of NGC 4485 and 4490 in Canes Venatici. This is an interesting pair of interacting galaxies. A supernova was recently discovered in NGC 4490 (SN 2008 ax). Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Roland and Linda,

Before we got too far along in spring last year I had a good look at this pair and thought about making a sketch. I am sorry I let that opportunity get past me because I never got a good night after that one best evening.
Your sketches here are just wonderful. Your conditions with haze and your camera are much better than my views without. Both of your sketches beautifully capture the dance of this pair.

Frank

Thanks Carlos. Thanks for the links, too. I took a look at a few images myself on Google this morning since I really did not know what it looked like. This object stands magnification pretty well with assisted optics (astro video). It would be really something to sketch with a Big Dob and a good astro video camera. Roland
