At about 2 pm local time my sky had cleared well enough to make an attempt to track planet Venus down during this early afternoon. The low humidity high pressure atmosphere that was overhead made this observation possible. Venus was about 13° North and 3° to the East of the sun and I knew I could safely block the sun from reaching my eyepiece using a large pine tree to block out the solar disk. Venus at the time of the observation was about -4th magnitude and 2.5 % illuminated. The disk of the planet was about 59” of arc in diameter and only 0.29 AU (27 million miles) from earth.
Sketching:
4.25"f/6 Newtonian 6mm eyepiece 107x For this sketch I used: blue construction paper, 11"x 9", a white Conte' pastel crayon and a blending stump, for templating the planet as a circle I used a lens cap. Brightness and contrast were slightly increased (+2) after scanning.
Date: 3-21-2009 7:00-7:15 UT clear skies, few clouds Large numbers of greater sandhill cranes flying north

Nicely done Frank. Love the contrast of the colors with the crescent Venus in the sky.

Very nice sketch of the crescent Venus.
Thanks for reminding us as I have forgotten that its phase has changed that much recently. You've alerted us that its time to observed it before it falls in front of the sun soon.

Thank you Jay and Mark, Observing conditions for the past 2 weeks have been very poor at night. This day time window to capture Venus was brief. After this weekend I am hopeful conditions for observing will return.

T5,
Thank you much for the kind words and for making it to the cold and somewhat cloudy open viewing at MVCC. Think warm thoughts for next month.

An excellent observation of a thin, crescent Venus. It looks striking against the blue sky. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Uwe, Carlos and Juha,
Thank you gentlemen; it was fun to see Venus so well in the daytime. I have wanted to repeat the observation but the sky is not cooperating yet.

Tom,
Thank you. It is always fun to track the planets down during the day as long as it can be done safely.

Frank,
This is an amazing sketch, with the blue background, and also with the modest equipment used.
I love it!

Hey Rony,
Thank you much. You don't need much aperture or magnification on Venus during the day but very clear skies are a must. I got the blue paper for daytime moon sketching. I am still waiting for my opportunity.
