Byers Series 2 equatorial mount issue
      #3007925 - 03/27/09 01:21 PM

Hello,

I work at the McDonald Observatory and we have an issue with our Byers Series 2 mount which supports a 22 inch Cassegrain. About a week ago the mount went completely dead. We found a blown fuse and replaced it and the mount came back to life. Although now we cannot get any response from the hand paddle in Dec. but RA is working OK. Can anyone point me to an expert that could help us fix this problem? Thank You

Joe Wheelock

Dear Jwheel;
it is probably just a broken solder joint in the hand paddle. I speak from experience as the same thing happened to me.
Keep us posted.

Any idea why the fuse blew in the first place? can you turn the dec worm by hand?
A seized/stuck motor could blow the fuse.
As you know Byers gears have a superb reputation but any ally gears can corrode and tighten up putting strain on the motors. We have a small Byers mount in the workshop awaiting attention, while they are very precise the one we have can't handle the torque from the bigger steppers we fitted, SS gears are on order.
