question regarding CG5 AS-GT mount
      #3018386 - 04/01/09 04:13 PM

I recently purchased a CG5 mount with go-to. My question is when I'm using the hand-controller, do I leave the RA and the DEC lock levers engaged(tightened)? I looked at the manual front-to-back and could not find the answer. Thanks.

Yes Vic, they need to be tight to keep the motors and encoders engaged, if you loosen them you'll mess up the electronics and the mount won't be able to go to accurately.

Don't tighten too much, though!

I used to tighten the heck out of the clutches to make sure that they wouldn't move, and after a while, the little piece of plastic that pushes into the shaft became smooshed. It just led to me having to tighten even more for the same effect.

Also be careful not to tighten the RA clutch too much or it will dig into the plastic housing of the RA motor during a slew. I made that mistake and didn't find out until my motors started to really whine about it in the middle of an east-west transition.
