Maurolycus (April 2, 2009)       #3019371 - 04/02/09 02:43 AM Attachment (60 downloads) Edit   Reply   Quote Quick Reply   I made an observation of the walled plain Maurolycus (41.8*S, 14.0*E, 71 miles (114 km) diameter) on April 2 , 2009 (02:00 U.T.) using my 9-inch (23-cm) F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain (253x). The seeing was average to good (5-7/10) with clear and dark skies (5/6). The central peaks of the Maurolycus rise over 15,000 feet (specifically 15, 518 feet (4,730 meters) above the floor of the plain. Terraced walls are prominent over this massive plain. The terrain over the northwest portion of the plain is pockmarked with small craters and ridges. Baroclus (44.9*S, 16.8*E, 51 miles (82 km) diameter) is the elliptical crater to the southeast of Maurolycus. It contains two smaller craters over it's eastern section. Faraday (42.4*S, 8.7*E, 43 miles (70 km) diameter) lies in shadow to the west of Maurolycus. A digital image produce using Photoshop CS3. You have captured the crater at a time when the lighting adds much interest to the view. This electronic method of sketching is quite beautiful and pleasing to the eye. I was impressed with the amount of detail that I was noting over the region (especially the floor of the plain). I actually noted detail that I did not record as the Moon was obstructed by my home. The northwest section of Maurolycus is very complex consisting of small craters/pits surounded by bright ridges and rifts as well. This section represented a challenge to render. I promise to show an example of how I did it soon but I initially recorded the position of the craters/pits then slowly added the bright ridges in sections. One can produce such "mottling" using filters provided by image processing software (e.g. Paint Shop Pro, Gimp, Photoshop, etc.) as well. I currently use a Wacom Graphire 3 graphics tablet (4 x 6 inch) for my digital renderings. Wacom, as well as other graphics tablet manufacturers, makes a variety of graphics tablets for the digital artist that fits various budgets. The more expensive Intous graphics tablet (2,048 levels of pressure) is great for the dedicated graphics artist but the less expensive Bamboo (512 levels of pressure) is more than adequate for the majority of artists. http://www.wacom.com/index2.php I look forward to everyone's future observations.
