Thanks again everyone for the encouraging comments.

While I was racing from object to object, I felt this sort of heightened adrenalin or anxiety or something that kept me going. The couple times I sat down for a snack was when I felt the tiredness start to crash down on me. Under 'normal' marathon circumstances, there's opportunity for a 1-2 hour nap around midnight. I can't imagine how that would work with sketching them all!

Carlos, thanks for the thoughts on ASOD. I'll gladly forward all thanks to Rich for administering it, and to Frank for prepping entries for carte blanche contributors.

Eric, while observing M51, I had a strong urge to 'connect-the-dots' on that bridge. The NE spiral arm on 5194 and the comma-extension on 5195 point right at each other, and my mind really wants to fill that in. But when I really focused averted vision on that area, I couldn't actually place any real structure there. Some nights are better than others though, so perhaps someday I'll confirm a sighting of it.

Rony, I used my SkyView Pro 6LT (6" f/8 Equatorial Newtonian) for everything but M24 which was done with 15 x 70 Oberwerks. I would like to have had the extra aperture of my 8" Dob, but I'm glad I had the equatorial mount. Right-angle sweeping is a real life...uh ...marathon-saver for navigating clouds and twilight! As far as the fatigue...a big thermos of coffee, staying standing up, and watching the sketch circles fill in is what kept me going

I dropped by his observing site shortly before midnight to see how this was going. Had no trouble finding him in the dark. I just followed the scent of scorched paper...

Great project I have to say. I never wanted to do Messier marathon without the sketching part so this for me is the only way to go of course.

The stars seem to be pretty well-placed in the sketches. Details are pretty much missing but that's understandable

I still have my personal project that'll be pretty horrible to accomplish:

18.) Sketch 250 objects in one night (stars can't be off more than 5')

Great job!

/Jake

That was M81 you were smelling Tom. Thank goodness you came by and stopped me before I frictionized a hole right through the middle of it!

Tom got to stand there and watch as I tried to hone in on M97/M108, but I kept banging the base of the OTA into the tripod legs. (You see, it takes three-dimensional thinking to realize the tube can be zoinked way up out of balance if something is hiding in the tripod shadow...but I had to wait for my audience to leave before I realized that.)

Thanks Jules!

Jake, thanks. Item 18 sounds like something I would really like to read about, and see the results when you get to it. A long, high-latitude winter night should make it possible, although potentially life-threatening. What made you choose 250 as the number of objects?

Nice work Jeremy. 104 sketches in one night is a pretty incredible feat.

Going to have to try this myself at some point...

First, I have to get a clear, Moonless sky. A rarity here at the moment!
It's something for later in the year, I think; I am off to South East Asia and Australia the week after next, until mid-July and we don't get our dark sky back until late July in any case.

we do have to be careful of fire hazards in this dry land of ours.

Jeremy you never cease to amaze me! Totally awesome sketches and considering the time constraints, just a tremendous accomplishment! Then you go stun us all with an M51 sketch that is hypnotically beautiful.

Faith, I hope you make good progress on your AL Southern Sky Binocular project.

Thanks Rich! It's good to see you around these parts some more, and to see that Jacumba under your avatar.

Thanks. I am going to be in Australia for seven weeks so I should easily polish it off.

There's optimism for you...

Wow, I'm speechless. Congrats Jeremy! I consider myself happy if I manage to sketch 3 objects one night.

Thanks Ferenc! Actually, three sketches during an observing evening is about my maximum too.
