A very nice review John, as usual!

Now you need to do one on that Apogee 6" refractor!

Thanks for the kind words.

Although I have used an Apogee 6" (which is why I bought this one) I've not been able to get this one out very much yet. It'll be a Spring project. Today I was too busy cutting up a plum tree that fell across my driveway from ice buildup last night to think much about astronomy. I envy those with a longer observing season!

Yes, it's a very informative article. I especially appreciate the comparisons with the LXD55 mount, and the pictures.

Nicely done John. I really think I should have bought the 8" SCT and put the savings into a good tripod and CCD setup sometimes. Sounds like it makes a great "Starter Imaging" setup.

How does the LXD75 compare with the Celestron CG5-GT which you reviewed earlier? Which do you prefer?

Great article.

Thanks for the tips and pictures on the C clip. My mount is now correctly assembled, and the tripod spreader works much better now. I wondered why I had a few pieces left over at the end

I went with the 5" refractor, and they only sent one counterweight. After adding a 2" WO diagonal, it wouldn't balance anymore. Almost, but not quite.

After attempting to contact Meade twice a day for 3 days, I finally got through. Apparently, one weight is all I was supposed to get. They didn't seem excited about sending another weight, but Meade is sending me a FREE counterweight shaft extension piece.

Due to clouds and cold, I have't had much chance to use the scope yet, but the 75 seems to be a stable, capable, easy-to-use mount.

I like it

That's something I probably should have mentioned in the review. The LXD75's are equipped with better accessories than the LXD55's were - the extra weight makes the standard counterweight configuration a little light in some cases. The shaft extension is the best fix (you probably don't want to carry an extra counterweight around!).

Hiya John,

That was a great article!! Looks like Meade actually learned from their mistakes on the LXD55 and came out with what appears to be a winner. Plus, the new white paint scheme makes the mount look just plain cool!! Is there is a significant improvement in the GOTOs over the LXD55? Just wondering. Keep those articles coming.

Anjal.

I liked the LXD75, but didn't notice any performance improvement over a good-working LXD55. I've always been impressed with the GoTo accuracy of the LXD55 for the price. The motors, encoders, gears, and electronics are essentially the same.

What would i need to attach an orion ed80 and st80 for guiding to this mount? Is there a special orion ring/dovetail combo that can be used for main/guidescope attachment out there that would work on this mount? Id like to have a dovetail plate that can hold both scopes in a nicely balanced fashion. Thanks!

David, I mounted an Orion 80mm guidescope (f/12) to my LXD75, but I had to drill new holes in the Orion's dovetail to make it fit on top of my OTA's rings. WOrks great, but I did have to add an additional weight to counter it.

John,

Excellent article/review. When I was trying to decide about a mount for my AR5OTA, your article was what made me put the standard manufacturers mount under it. I had been deliberating over other mounts. I also had to extend the weight tube when I added a 2" diagonal. It is much better than lugging around another weight.

Thanks for the review.

A few personal observations about these mounts: I have both an LXD55 and an LXD75 mount. The first thing I noticed about the LXD75 as compared with the 55 was that the motion of the scope along both axes is incredibly smooth. The second thing is that the tripod is much heavier duty and more stable. I have no trouble mounting a Celestron 9.25 inch F10 or a Meade 127 mm ED/APO refractor on the LXD75. This would not be possible, at least for photographic purposes, on the 55. The autostar GOTO function works OK on both but you have to educate the mount on a bright star within a couple of binocular fields of your desired object to find it accurately. Even then it will probably be necessary to use the "slew" spiral to put the object in the field of view of a 25mm eyepiece. The polar alignment scopes on both scopes are fine. The ALT/AZ adjustment knobs are a little better on the LXD75. Neither mount exceeds 30 sec unguided tracking of an object at 1250mm focal length with polar alignment done by the polar alignment scope. Longer unguided exposures result in noticible trailing. I don't know how they would do if the drift method of alignment were used since I never have the time to pursue that. With either of my heavier OTA's, the LXD75 needs an extra counterweight to balance. I just take the weight from the LXD55 and move it to the 75. Both mounts have wicked backlash. Even if the OTA is near perfectly balanced you'll frequently get a "check mount" error when slewing to an object. Ignoring the error message usually results in a slew which gets you quite close to the desired object however. The battery pack that comes with the scope (minus the batteries) runs out of juice quickly and I have to change the batteries every new night I go into the field (6 alkaline D cells) which gets expensive. At home, I just use a 12 volt DC adapter. Finally, in the field I have to level the mount using a large carpenter's level that I lay across the accessory tray in two directions, zeroing the bubble. It doesn't seem to matter whether you choose the "easy" alignment; the one star to two star alignment procedures... they all result in about the same GOTO accuracy in my estimation. Usually I just ignore these procedures and use the OBJECT fundtion and select STAR, NAMED to choose a couple of bright stars for myself. The scope comes within a couple of binocular fields of the star and then I center the star manually and push the ENTER button. That gets the scope into a useable GOTO mode after rough polar alignment. Otherwise, you are stuck with the star selection of the alignment subroutine and most of the time the star the AUTOSTAR picks is not one visible from where I am... its either in the trees or behind a building! Hope these comments are useful. Overall, I like the mount but can't wait until my Takahashi mount arrives in a month or so!

Rick Evans
