M81 and M82 form a beautiful galaxy pair for small telescopes. Both galaxies are easy targets, even for somewhat light polluted skies. I have made several sketches of them before, but it is always enjoyable to hunt them down. Here is the view from my backyard, with a simple 4 inch refractor.
Site : Bekkevoort, Belgium ( 51° N ) Date : March 30, 2009 Time : around 22.00 UT Scope : Skywatcher 102/500mm achromatic refractor Eyepiece : Baader Hyperion Zoom at 12mm Magnifiction : 42x FOV: 75’ Filter : none Seeing : 3/5 Transp. : 2/5 Sky brightness : 19.48 magnitudes per square arc second near zenith (SQM reading). Nelm: 5.1 Sketch Orientation: N up, W right. Digital sketch made with Corel Paint Shop Pro X2, based on a raw pencil sketch.

Rony,
This is a masterpiece. The sketch captures the semi-distant galaxies suspended in what looks like infinite depth of space with the milky way stars in the foreground. Very impressive work!

Rony,
A beautiful and accurate observation of M81 and M82 in Ursa Major. You have captured the appearance of these galaxies perfectly in your instrument. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Rony,
Wonderful sketch. You've captured what I recall seeing through my smaller instrument (and my larger one when the moon is high and the light pollution is bad).
Thanks for sharing.

Nice sketch, I only wish I could see M81-M82 from my light pollution backyard, which in the White Zone from Chicago.

Rony just awesome! If it wasn't in this forum, it would need a note under it saying "This is a sketch". Fantastic depth and wonderfully subtle rendering of the galaxies. Wow!

Very nice sketch of this galaxy pair. It conjures up my memories of seeing deep sky objects from my dark sky location home for many years.
There was a book done by Cambridge University some years ago, I think in collaboration with Jack Newton’s photography of DSO's. It showed them as they would be through modest sized telescopes in medium dark skies. Your fine sketch works would make a great contribution for a book like that again.

Rich & Mark,
I'm glad that you like my rendering.
It's been two years now (remember the Rosette Nebula sketch in March 2007 ) since I've switched from pencil sketching to digital sketching. I had to learn it all the hard way. Pencil sketching goes a lot quicker, but the digital aproach allows a more subtle sketch.

I cannot remember now if you have ever tried or discussed pastel sketching. The time question of which is quicker or which medium renders greater subtleties, could be a great debate about sketching and the fine details exercised in the process. I think that many people fear that dry pastel chalks are a big commitment such as oil paints; however they are so simple to blend and the color ranges are infinite and equal to if not surpassing oil paints. The blending and smearing of colors or contrasts in black and white is a delight to discover. There is no clean-up with exception of washing ones hands of the chalk dust when finished. Then there is a final bonus: You have a masterpiece artwork in hard copy with pastels as a respected traditional medium as your artists original in whatever size you decide to work in.
I do admit that it can take some practice depending on the individual as with any medium, yet pastels are so readily accessible; no electricity, no computer, no prior knowledge, just begin to move the hand holding the chalk and something wonderful is going to happen!
